Well I'm an authorized ASUS repair center in Washington, and I get a few ASUS Best Buy models in... Don't they lack the 360-AD warranty?

yes, they lack the asus accidental warranty and have best buys junky warranty. also, the quad core edition of this almost has to use the same mobo as the g71gx, which should mean that my g71gx is quad core compatible.... right? I still have yet to come accross anyone throwing a quad core into their g71gx from best buy.

I just purchased the G71 and saw that they have the new version G72 in my area for less money than what I bought the G71 for. I can still return the G71, but I am unsure if that newer version is worth it. Has anyone seen or run the new G72 version? It comes pre-loaded with WIN7 and all the specs are the same. The new ver seems to weigh a lot less and is more slim.

I just don't want to get a lemon when I really like the G71. They told me last night that they would swap the laptops for me and refund the price difference or just get the price difference on the one I have.

It probably weights the same or really close, uses the same chasis only difference that i see is the keyboard, no lights on the sides, and w7 preinstalled. it probably weights some onces less or more, but should be the same.

Would like to mention that the outside exterior of the G72GX-RX05 is completely different than the G71GX-RX05. The touchpad for instance isn't that silver metallic lining that is stiff as a board, it's now a "bubble/ massaging" surface with one single click bar (though it does have a left and right clicker underneath). Also, they removed ALL the light on the front cover except the Republic of Gamer emblem and that single light line underneath it. Right below the Republic of Gamer's emblem is a brushed metallic strip that goes across the bottom of the front cover but goes about 3-4 inches high. The case itself is not black but a navy blue with sparkles (similar to the sparkles used in the G51VX-RX05 cover).

Inside, they removed the touch sensitive buttons that were at the top that disabled the touchpad, went to the linux express, etc. and replaced them with tactile silver buttons. The keyboad is now backlit and the indicator bar on the right of the keyboad has been removed (placed on the near bottom/side of the laptop). Windows 7 is prebuilt inside of course but surprisingly, there is a EAX 4.0 HD sticker on the laptop's palm rests even though it is still using Realtek HD Audio as it's internal soundcard (I have no clue why manufacturers go with realtek, why not just grab Creatives Sounblaster Audigy like Sager does...). I will mention that the screen is a 17.3" (16:9) unlike the G71GX-RX05 which is a 17.1" (16:10) and is also at a resolution of 1600 x 900 unlike the G71GX-RX05 being a 1440 x 900. The laptop is slimmer than the G71GX-RX05, comparison of 2" instead of 2.4".

The price of this laptop makes me bite my lip and say why didn't I just wait :..(! The G72GX is priced fantastically and the specs are identical to the G71GX I bought, I feel ripped off actually. I can't even get a partial refund because I lost my receipt, sucks to be me...

UPDATE: Well I guess Best Buy isn't too bad, they said I can pick up...
    ...
    My reciept, lol.
They reprinted it off and told me I can pick it up, they keep data of purchases made by individuals for up to 6 months (woah!)

Lucky me I guess, sadly though - since it's been past 14 days of the purchase I can't exchange the G71GX-Rx05 for the G72GX nor can I have a partial refund... still sucks to be me I guess...

Does anyone think that Asus will release in the near future...a non-bestbuy version of this unit that will have a 1080p res LCD?

Ya..and that case i may return this bestbuy version and wait for the online vendor version with 1080p, and maybe the gaming backpack, mouse, etc...that the non-bestbuy version of most ASUS gaming laptops come with.
I think the 1600x900 screen on the bestbuy version is "OK"....but the viewing angles are terrible, and it's almost as if there is too much backlighting on the screen (blacks are grey at most angles unless you are looking straight at it).

Well on the off chance, if you were/are a Premier Silver Member when you made the G71 purchase you actually would have 45 days and no restock fee (if opened) to return your purchase.

Sadly I'm not, I'm only a simple rewards member :(. Do you plan on exchanging warhammer40k? It would like to add that the keyboard is not only backlit but it's a chicklet keyboard as well from the G51VX/G60VX. I take it that alot of people were not fans of the normal laptop keyboard on the G71GX and people let Asus know that they would have liked a chicklet keyboard, wish granted.
Now I am sad... I liked the backlit chicklet keyboard on the G51VX and envied it still after purchasing the G71GX, now I'm going to envy the G72GX - the laptop I SHOULD have waited on instead of searching hard for the G71GX  ...

Well there was no knowing back then, the G71 were selling out like mad, and there is no info coming from Asus or Bestbuy into knowing what they will be getting. Either way, you have a extremly good computer, with temps that are really great for an asus, with good benchmark numbers, etc. Maybe you could persuade them with your creditcard statement, but i doubt it.

*After being slapped the sense back into me by Abula*
You are right, I still believed I got a great laptop, I can live without the chicklet keyboard :p!

That's all I would gain from the G72GX, the specs are the same as the G71GX but it (G72GX) has Windows 7 prebuilt inside. Anyway, I sent my email off to Asus with a copy of my G71GX-RX05 Receipt I just got from Best Buy (good thing they keep a record of 6 months of purchases per individual). With my delay though, hopefully I don't see my free windows 7 cd come in the mail too late... did you do your stuff to get your windows 7 cd Abula?

dont worry about getting it "late." i sent my proof of purchase in 3 months ago, and its still pending..... and asus is taking a while to answer my most recent email....

in other news i got a dl copy of windows 7 for my old g1 and it runs better than it did out of the box with vista, so im hopeful for my g71 whenever it does actually get vista. just hope asus provies necessary drivers etc to keep direct console, turbo gear, and all the other necessities goin strong.

Well... im on the limb about asus win7 atm, partally my fault as i didnt register it earlier, but i cant atm do much, with some people confirming there is a charge to the CC, so i might not be able to redeem it, cause asus dont take my International CC (at least on the asus estore). That said, my boss goes to the US the following week, i just saw the Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade Family Pack (3-User) and i need one for my desktop so i just order it, not what i would called smart, but not many choices open, if i wait then my boss wont be able to pick it up, either way, its done.

Did they at least send you an email saying they received your proof of purchase? I guess we all will be waiting, hopefully I receive it before my next move (next year in March)...

@Abula: I was thinking about the family pack too due to my wife will still be on Vista on her laptop while I'll be on windows 7 :p! Guess I'll get it for her B-day (she's a tech nut like me)!

Apologies to all... sorry for hijacking this thread. Maybe a mod can move the few posts by us [g71gx and g51vx owners] to the G71 thread...

I actually already exchanged a G51 and G71 (I was on the fence between the two) and bought a G51 -X1A as it had the best of all worlds for me: Best Warranty (both), Smaller Size (than G71), and Stronger CPU (than G51).

Well from experience the backlit chicklet keyboard is a love/hate relationship. I actually don't use the light because I dont need to look at the keyboard to type. If you have OCD then you are better off with the G71. The rubberized keyboard and keys of the G72 would have you going insane, as it shows every bit of body oils imaginable. One typical session and your keyboard can look icky, heaven forbid you snack while you use your laptop.

Well i needed 2 at least, so it played good, still not happy but was a more reliable thing given my situation, i was also worried that the family pack is a limited time offer, so i didn't want to gamble my luck with asus policy in terms of win7 credit.

So I took the G71 back and got the G72, so far so good. Having an issue with W7 not installing an app off the DVD, but I will hopefully figure that out. Looks very similar to the G71 and I really like the lit up keyboard. I still need to test games on it though... if I could get it installed that is...

I must say out of all the ROG series I like this lid the best. Very nice.

There are putting these out very fast and if I only waited 2 months I could have gotten the cheaper G51J instead of my G51VX. I'm still very happy with it anyway but I wish they waited at least 6 months or so before putting out the new models.

The backlit kb is one of the best features in my opinion. I tested to see how I could make due with it off at night and I just can't see anything. It's not just regular typing but using different keys for games or using the FN key shortcuts which I'm using constantly. I'm really glad they added that into the G72GX.

I was aware that something new would come out soon so to ease things I immediately began putting away for a new laptop for next summer. Hopefully they make better cooling and a sub-woofer would really be great.

So I went and traded in the G71 for the G72 and.... I already took it back and got my G71. The case looks fancy, however, it has issues. I loaded up some of my games and it ran way slower with less frame rate than the G71. The screen has issues like someone mentioned earlier. It kinda gave me a headache it was so bright ( and yes I turned down the brightness )

I got my G71 home and I was happy once again, I think the G71 is probably one of the best laptops for gaming that I have ever seen.

If you are looking to purchase a new laptop, get the G71 NOT the G72

I went to BB and took a look at the G60 and G72 last night. The G60 was the same old stuff with a new lid so there wasn't much change there. The G72 definitely had a better display (LG) and it showed. The colors were more vibrant vs the G51, brighter and it had better viewing angles. However, I was not the least bit impressed with the G72's new touchpad. It seemed awkward and difficult to use. The laptop also had a lot of wasted space near the palm rest, it seemed like Asus made it unnecessarily large without any function to go with it. Overall, the G72 is an upgrade over the G71, especially the display but I'd still pick a G51 over it. The G51 is still aesthetically more pleasing and has better ergonomics.

Reason- The keyboard was replaced from the generic everyday laptop keyboard to the smaller chicklet keyboard used on the G50/G51/G60. It also doesn't help that depite what people think, the chassis was changed a bit to accommodate the bigger screen size (G71=17.1 , G72=17.3). I'm telling ya, if you had the G71GX right next to the G72GX, they don't look identical at all besides the ports along the sides.

I also didn't care for the touchpad either 5150joker. I can understand their reasoning in making the touchpad more flush with the laptop maybe but the bubbles (I don't know what they are) are kinda weird - is on there to massage my fingers/make it more comfortable? Also, the single clickbar seems to make me wonder if they were trying to mimic someone (*cough* Apple *cough*). At least it's a illusion of being a single clickbar, it does have a left and right clicker under neath.

Well, if Asus have used the same cooling system in the G72, like the one in G71, I don't think the Quad CPU is a good idea. It has almost twice the TPD, compared to the P8700, the superior performance for the moment is also questionable. I've read that this very model Quad CPU reaches temperatures as high as 80C! And this adding to the high temperatures reached by the GPU would lead to nothing good.

Yeah, heat is my main concern on the quad as well. I would also want to raise the 260m to stock speeds. Another issue is that I'm not sure I like the touchpad/clickbar either. I've messed around with similar set-ups and been unimpressed.

I would probably just suck it up and get the 51j but those temps look high too, and that's with a downclocked gpu I think.

Well the bigger question is ... can the Best Buy G72GX accept quad cores in the first place. No one has swapped a dual core for a quad core in the G71GX-RX05 that we know of in this forum, so right now we have no confirmation on the G71GX or the G7GX from Best Buy of being quad compatible. I've been eyeing the QX9300 for some time but keep telling myself no because of what happened to Forge (he tried to install a quad in his g51vx Bestbuy lappy - it was a no go.)

Yea, except Best Buy sold Quad version of the G71Gx for a limited time and the G72Gx-RX09 (which already has a Q9000) seems to be based on the same thing.

This may be true but the G51VX from online resellers was able to have quads yet the Best Buy models of the G51VX in the stores did not.

Yea, but the way I see it Best Buy never sold Quad versions of the G51vx, but they did sell Core 2 Duo and Quad versions of the G71Gx and now we're seeing the same thing with the new G72Gx BB series.

Also on the ASUS support site, under drivers and downloads there's a "G51vx" and "G51vx Best Buy" which makes sense, because they're not exactly the same, but for the G72Gx it's not categorized separately as BB version.

EXCHANGE YOUR G71's FOR G72's AT BEST BUY!!!!!

I had a g71 from best buy. It has been removed from their shelves. It has way too many issues. I went to rage about my fail g71 because the LCD was going haywire and it was getting uber hot within seconds of turning it on. They gave me the G72. The G72 is made to replace the g71. If you're upset about not having a g72 go and try to exchange your g71 for it. You're welcome :| suprised this news isn't out. Enjoy you're free laptops. Now you don't have to be mad about that scratch you got on your screen :)

I'm sorry... I can't hear you, can you type any larger!!!
Lol, anyway, I already tried to exchange it and they said it was a no go unless I had purchased the G71GX 14 days before the G72GX had come out.
I'm not as upset as I use to be and frankly still glad I purchased the G71GX-RX05.

Don't care for either laptops touchpads as I use a mouse anyway.
Screen Resolution may be better on the G72GX but I play in 1024 x 768 in my games anyway on my G71GX.
Chicklet keyboard is nice on the G72GX but I'm happy with the standard laptop keyboard on the G71GX as well.
Windows 7 built in is nice as I wouldn't be enduring this Win7 upgrade headache right now but I've got alot of patience (well see).

Overall, still happy with my G71GX purchase and the G72GX is just a minor upgrade, I'm like the most people who owned a Gateway 7805u - why upgrade to the 7809u when it's near exactly the same thing.
The G71GX will determine by itself if I'm meant to have the G72GX anyway... aka if the G71GX breaks or has problems in the future, I'll simply exchange it to Best Buy for the G72GX...
    ...
    ...
    hmmm...
    Now where's my hammer ;)....

Hehe good way to look at it Da1writer, if it breaks it will decide for you. Seriously am I one of the only ones that prefers the look of the g71 to the g72? I like my lights, like my palm rest, and I like my 16:10 screen. Hardware is the same, anyways. Only thing it has that is really cool to me is the keyboard. I do like the g72 but I would't trade my g71 in for it.

Anyone have any clue how long it usually takes for other websites to start selling this computer?

I have been doing some research and the G72GX is my ideal choice, but I feel like it will be lower priced when it is available from websites other than Bestbuy's.

You wont find better deals (except for refurb) than the Best Buy versions of ASUS laptops. This is usually because Best Buy specifications are usually striped of features like Bluetooth, high resolution, high-end CPU, 2 year ASUS warranty and ASUS extra's like backpack and mouse.

If you are in a budget of $1300 or less the just get the bestbuy version of your choice. If you have more money to spend, the G51j is lower than $1400 atm from amazon. And if you have more than that just get a Sager.

Just decided to purchess it from bb $10 a month for 17 and then the full $1,000, I have the money I will just invest it, their financing options are weird.

what do you think of the g72 vs the gateway fx? I read Asus was better then gateway so I got that one, or should I just return it in my 14 day grace period. nice best buy.

Does anyone know about this software turbo gear extreme? the manual was incredebly vague and didn't mention it

No... reason why not right now is because the owners of the G72gx believe there isn't going to be a difference due to the G72GX having the SAME EXACT specs as the G71GX. So if you want to see temps and benchmarks, your best bet is to check out my review (link located in my sig).

I also asked this very same question and got shot down right away.

    hi!

there are some differences between the G72GX and the G71GX specs.
the major one is that the G72GX has a LED LCD. the G71GX does not.
however, the G71GX is bluetooth enabled and the G72GS not....
the other noticeable difference is that the G72GX is much more elegant than the G71GX and the keyboard is backlit in the G72GX.
all in one, it seems that the G72GX is more interesting...

ASUS N71Vn-A1 NoteBook Intel Core 2 Quad Q9000(2.00GHz) 17.3" 4GB Memory 320GB HDD 7200rpm DVD Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce GT 240M - Retail
    Quad Core CPU +NVIDIA GT240M 1GB DDR3 +Windows 7 experience

the price: $1300 @newegg. The only con comparing to the G72 is that it does not come with the Blu-ray drive...
