New Egg was selling the exclusive Best Buy ASUS ux31a (Black).
They have to unload all these pc's that are being returned (with nothing really wrong with them) and they usually will do this thru New Egg.

true. but BB is a huge B&M and online retailer, whereas the MS Store pales in comparison. i agree the UX31LA will eventually make it to places like New Egg and Overstock.com, but i just can't see that happening anytime soon. whereas BB and Amazon are still selling all the Ivy Bridge Zenbook versions at near retail prices.

the general consumer doesn't even know the UX31LA exists. it's as if ASUS is testing this model at the MS Store as a pre-release. the number of owners at this point has to be incredibly small, which is probably why MS has already discounted it by $200. this model is lost in the shuffle with no exposure at this point, a nonsensical strategy by ASUS.

version 205 is designated for the LA version, whereas 206 is the LAA version(would this be the correct version for my laptop??). winflash does not recognize 206 file size as being valid. sorry, i'm not very computer savvy; how exactly did you update to 206?

I'm curious if it is possible to use the function keys without having to press fn. Does anyone know if it's possible with the Zenbook?

Then it wouldn't be a function key

F keys are dual purpose one to work with out pressing the function key and one while pressing the function key.

But if you wanted to use f2 for example, you would use the function key. If you wanted to adjust the brightness, you wouldn't use the fn button. So I'm asking if you can switch it around.

There is a version available of the 206 for the la, use that one. winflash is total crap, put the extracted bios file you download onto a fat32 formatted usb stick, and then boot into the bios (you may have to turn off fast boot in the power options menu). I believe the bios access button was esc or f2, but I may be recalling wrong. Anyway, once you're in there, there is a section that says something about bios updates. Enter that menu and select the usb stick, and then the bios file on it, and then tell it to update. Make sure you have a full charge and are plugged in, and don't turn it off till it's finished. It shouldn't take more than 5-10 minutes max, mine took something like a minute or two I think.

General question for those who bought the UX31LA. I know in previous zenbook models it came with a carrying sleeve and I noticed it didn't come with one on this model. Just wondering if anyone else is like that as well? The only things in the box were the micro-display port and a usb-ethernet adapter.

Does anybody knows anything about the UX31LA with 16:9 HD+ EWV (1600 x 900) screen?
    Is it touchscreen also?

    And what about upgrading it?
I know RAM is soldered on the motherboard, but what about SSD upgrade?
Can you perform it normally and what is the storage limit?

The screen is 1920 by 1080.
    It is a touchscreen.
I don't think you can upgrade the ssd.
You get around 60gb of available storage out of the box.

But I am asking for this screen (1600x900) particulary, it is listed in specifications on Asus page:

    http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/ASUS_ZENBOOK_UX31LA/#specifications

That model is in my country available. I would like to find these answers so I could maybe buy that particular model:

    http://www.mikronis.hr/detalji_proizvoda.46ab158526044873a372b78bd5f78964.asus-zenbook-ux31la-intel-core-i5-4200u-1-60ghz-4gb-128gb-ssd-w8-13-3-hd-intel-hd-graphics-4400-p-n-ux31la-r5017h.aspx

Also I found here possible SSD upgrade:
SSD for Asus UX31LA - Zandparts

As this model is almost exact UX31A model, which could be upgraded,I believe this one can too, right?

Well here in North America, we have the 1080p model, so I don't know anything about the one you're referring to, but it's probably similar

I know some Zenbooks were upgradable, while others were not. This model is pretty much identical to the Ux31a, so if it could be done with that, most likely with this one too.

Had the issue for the first time today when I woke it up from sleep and found it in BIOS. Very odd. Been using the power button to put the laptop to sleep before closing the lid. Would definitely explain the power drain I had yesterday when I could have sworn I charged it. Also with battery use, I think i'm averaging around 5-6 hours a charge.

Quick update about the sleep issue on lid closing. I believe it has been solved. I updated my Realtek LAN driver after updating to Windows 8.1 and after updating when I close the lid it goes into sleep mode every time it seems. I tested out by having music playing and when I closed the lid it stopped playing and didn't come back on whereas before the music would have started to play again within about 5 seconds or so.

Let me know is the sleep issue is resolved for you guys after updating to Windows 8.1 and applying the new Realtek LAN drivers directly from ASUS website.

Doesn't seem to have work for me. Before, in order for it to sleep when closing the lid, I had to close it slowly.

Now after I updated the drivers, when I close the lid, the light on the side (the one that tells you if it's on or asleep) stay on. And when I turn it on, it doesn't resume, the screen just stay off, which leads me to killing it.

Update: I reinstalled the drivers and that last problem with it not turning on is fixed. But it still doesn't sleep when closing the lid. The power button does work, which puts it to sleep nicely.

Is it just me or is the build quality of UX31LA seem a lot better than the build quality of UX301LA and UX302?

The flex lid in the 301/02 seems cheap.

I haven't actually seen a Zenbook Infinity, but by the videos I've seen, it does seem to have more flex in the lid compared to the ux31la.

Also looks like the Microsoft store finally says that the Ux31la has 7 hours of battery life.

Also, I noticed that the 4GB RAM was increased to 8GB...Who knows what to believe or why the changes, hard to believe it was just an honest mistake.

it will be interesting to see what happens next with this UX31LA model if the MS Store is truly sold out and won't be getting any further inventory.

when the UX31LA was first announced, they said it'd be available with an i7/256GB configuration but we've only seen the i5/126GB thus far.

i've noticed in the past where the MS Store only sells one specific configuration of a model and then no longer carries it once sold out.

Not sure if I like their Smart Audio software for inputted speakers and headphones, need to play around with the EQ cause the standard options doesn't sound right to me. Otherwise, everything has worked well for me and the lid closure to sleep for me has been working flawlessly.

Does any1 have any new news on weather MS will be restocking this product before Christmas? Or an official email address, so i could "nagg" them? Because I'm really hooked on this product.

my experience with the MS Store is that once they put a laptop on sale and it sells out, they don't restock it again. that doesn't necessarily mean they won't restock this one, but i wouldn't get my hopes up too high.

    B&H photo is now selling model UX31LA- XH51T which has a 256GB SSD, but they're asking $1499..

    ASUS Zenbook UX31LA-XH51T 13.3" Touchscreen UX31LA-XH51T

it looks like Amazon will be selling the XH51T as well, but don't have any in stock yet. personally, i wouldn't pay $500 more for a larger SSD only. maybe if it also came with an i7, but that's not the case here.

Well ... i was actually so desperate that i used the MS Live chat service. Hopefully the anwser to my question on restocking wasnt generic, because the anwser was:

"They have not provided us with updated information on the stock, but it should be restocked soon as it has been out for awhile now."

    Should i take this seriously?

honestly, i don't know. but it sounds more encouraging than a 'no' and if you're not in hurry, then you might as well wait. you could also call a bunch of MS stores and see if they have any in stock.. i'm sure they could do a charge and ship to you if they have one.

hopefully the UH51 base model appears again at other retailers. the $999 sales price is good value considering it comes with 8GB RAM, AC Card, quality IPS screen, and solid build.

Has anyone verified that there is a second ssd slot inside? I would love to add another 128 gb. as a data drive.
I am assuming it is a m2 slot? The specs on the Microsoft site are minimal at best. Asus website specs are minimal also.
    Yes I have one.

I'm wondering this too. I searched a bit and found this Norwegian site. It does mention something about 2 SSDs and raid storage. Not sure if the model they reviewed already had 256GB or if you can add more storage.

Yes they say it has 2 SSD slots and they use 2 -128 gb SSD drives in a Raid 0 array (makes them one drive). I was hoping to find out to get another 128 SSD to add to it (data drive) instead of having to replace the original one with a 256gb SSD.

I am a little late to this thread, but I have a question. I just returned a UX302LA to Best Buy because of poor battery life I got about 4 1/2 hours on light duty, web, Email, etc. But, there was another thing that irked me about the UX302LA. The SD card would only go in the slot half way. That means you would have to carry the sd card someplace where you won't lose it or leave it in the slot and risk breaking it.

Anyway, that was a long setup for my question. Does the SD card go all the way into the slot on the UX31LA?

    Thanks, Jim

To answer your question, no. The SD card also only goes in halfway.

But, it does have excellent battery life.

How things are right now, it seems so.

Looks like Asus is ditching the Zenbook Prime in favour of the new Infinity.

Technically the Infinity is supposed to be the next generation of their Zenbooks, so it makes sense why they might/are discontinuing.

as i've stated a few times already, it's been my experience that once the MS Store sells out of a certain model after putting it on sale, they don't carry it again. that doesn't necessarily mean that model UX31LA-UH51T has been discontinued however.

a higher spec model UX31LA-XH51T is being sold by Amazon, B&H, and many other retailers, so this UX31LA (Zenbook Prime) line is still very much active.

Well, I just visited the Century City MS store, and the UX31LA was out of stock. An employee there told me he doesn't know whether items get restocked or not, but it did sound like it goes in and out of stock pretty frequently.
I did get to play with it since they do still have it on display, and it was quite nice. I liked the keyboard a lot more than expected.

Mm, they probably won't resell returned items at the Microsoft store.

Anyway, has anyone run Linux on the UX31LA? Linux support for the Haswell Ultrabooks has been surprisingly good, so hopefully it is too on this laptop.

anyone know any reputable reviews on the UX31LA? from looking at the specs and its selling price, it seems like really good ultrabook, but i was wondering hows it actual performs in real life.
