Hey all just purchased the asus v6va, anyone have any feedback on this notebook? What i was looking for in a laptop was a laptop that was not too small and one that was not too big and heavy. I know asus has a good reputation for quality products and the thing that got my attention was its portability and good battery life. This one has a sonoma core type processor and my other 17" has a dothan core processor. Does anyone know what major difference there is here?
Thanks for any input guys..

Sonoma just refers to a Centrino package that contains a newer chipset that implements PCI-Express, and in particular, faster memory (DDR2). The processor is still a Dothan, just running at slightly different frequencies (i.e., multiples of the motehrboard speed).

SpacemanSpiff is correct, and if you want a review of the v6va, coriolis has one, he might see this thread, otherwise send him a pm

Centrino is an all encompassing mobile technology platform.. which is to identify the use of one of the chipsets below, with one of the cpus below that... and one of their wireless cards.
Carmel (3/03) / Sonoma (1/05) / Napa (1/06) - Chipsets
Banias / Dothan / Yonah - CPUs
Basically - The V6va is a can't miss....... the Core Duo replacement is going to be great as well, but it will lack the absolutely stunning IPS screen that the V6va still has..... that in all honesty is what makes the V6va sell so well and it's the number one reason most people aren't waiting.... -
That was a good overall review with some minuses as expected. I stood with the base package on this buy.. -

I would review it, but last I heard, Andrew had already done one, he did the V6v last year, and he's gonna recap it
No need for 3 reviews -
If I had the money I would have definately bought the v6va. It looks pretty sweet. Enjoy!

If someone has a V6Va with the IPS screen and needs it replaced for whatever reason under warranty, are they assured to get another IPS screen in It's place? Is there any possibility they'd get stuck with a non IPS replacement screen at any time...say If It's towards the end of their two year warranty?

... There is a big reason why Asus has horrided the IPS screens that they have and won't sell them..... they're going to store them, just in case... but if supply picks up again - which I'm sure it will - then they won't have to worry about it.
.... At the same time, if say you broke your screen.. physically sat on it and broke it.... warranty or not, that's not going to be covered. So at that point if you go to Asus and want to buy a new screen.... you very well may get the option of the matte or the IPS screen... one is going to be considerably cheaper than the other and you may decide on the matte just because you don't have the money to replace it. However, if supply is tight, warranty work comes first and they may not give you the option... they may tell you, "We're sorry but we don't have those panels for sale".... Right now, we can't buy them because they won't pull any out of RMA repair.... so it's possible, at the right (or wrong) time, that the same happen to a customer who physically breaks the screen. But, you have to remember that goes for anything, not just the screen. Anything you break has a chance of not being able to be fixed or replaced.. or at least having a long wait.. so it's very little to worry about. -

Thanks for the detailed response Justin. It's just too bad you can't add the extended warranty offer onto the V6Va, oh well, you can't have everything!!!

I just noticed this...Justin, if you were to put that IPS screen on the Lambo model when It comes in, doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of what makes it the lambo model, since you'd be replacing the whole screen and special cover? Or would the IPS screen fit inside the custom lambo chasis therefore maintaining the lid/cover and benefiting from the IPS screen...I'm guessing that's how it would work right?
I was under the impression that the screen and lid/cover (the whole top of the laptop) were/are one and the same thing. -

um... i don't know if I totally understand you.... but the lambo model is based on the v6... they have the same lcd panel dimensions and connections... when you take the screen out of one, you just take the inner panel and you'd use the lid and bezel from the new one.... if that makes sense... i guess it would since you sorta answered it yourself.. but they, we're on the same page..... just been a loooong day.

Yeah, I know I answered it myself in the end...It came to me while I was writing...so I figured I'd just post it so you could confirm that's how It's done.
That would make one killer laptop, that's just one of the cool perks you get over the rest of us!!! -
Oh, just to get back to the topic, GREAT PURCHASE~!!!!
That's one helluva machine and I am even thinking about exchanging my Z70Va for the V6Va, buuuuuuuuuuuut that would mean more money, so we'll see.
Cheers,
Mike
