The Notebook Review forums were hosted by TechTarget, who shut down them down on January 31, 2022. It has changed, but you can pay for the extended warranty if you want it. Asus thought that people might want to save some money by only taking a 1 year warranty while those who want more can pay for it.
It has been a two year warranty up until November. I'm not sure why you mentioned us and their warranty..... Our custom systems still come with a standard two year which you could make a one or a three... Asus used to have the standard two year, but made it a one with the option of adding two more. Just a different way of doing things.
What is the general feeling about extending the Asus warranty? I typically shy away from extended warranties, but on occasion they do seem worthwhile. Opinions?
I put it this way...... in fact, I think I actually may have put it this way to you (I believe you asked me this via email).
... but $170 to triple the length of the warranty.... that's just a hair less than 10% of the cost of the system. If a motherboard or LCD dies on the 366th day after purchase - either would cost more than double the extended warranty.
Some like to live life on the edge - it's no big deal to me and other people's opinions really shouldn't matter.... it's a personal choice and really up to you. IF you thinik that you're more likely to run it over with your car than an Asus product to just stop working over that period - than save the money and put it towards another battery or something....... Anyone who has ever owned any Asus product knows that they're built to last and internal failure is unlikely....... but I guarentee that the people who question buying it are going to be the same people complaining on that first day out of warranty when something happens......
Thanks Justin...it wasn't me who asked via email, but I think that's good advice. And the comments about the unlikely internal failure is sort of what I was looking for. My general feeling is that most electronics will fail right away or never, thus a standard 1 year warranty is adequate.
Right...... in five plus years - I've seen the an array of situations..... The first notebook we imported is still functioning like the day it came in....... yet I've also seen a motherboard die in a few weeks. Tests certainly can't guarentee that and neither can a warranty...... it's just there "in case". IF you don't have a problem, that's $170 in Asus' pocket...... if you do have a problem, they may be out twice that... It's a gamble and extended warranties are something that only pay off when you have something like 100 buy them and only 3 ever use them.... but those kinds of numbers are really what pushes the price..... it's a gamble but it's not like it's costing 30-40% of the system.... it's just under 10%.... in 3 years what is $170? But in a year what is $500 for a possible motherboard replacement? Luck of the draw for sure... but with Asus I can promise you've got a better chance than any other product you can buy. There are certain products out there that you'd be dumb to buy without an extended warranty....... we all know what those are.... so it's up to you.
Might as well ask to keep the discussion going. Batteries - are they only warrantied one year, or will they scale w/ the system if the extended warranty is purchased?
