I think those companies cannot just open your HDD and browse its contents unless they have to. Was it a hardware or software problem?

Let's say you saw someone being bashed on the street, maybe you'd call the cops or go out there and help the guy out, I doubt you would do nothing about it.

    Something like a moral responsibility..

If they see something definitely wrong about what you have on your computer, they might report it to the authorities, but like HerrKaputt said, it's not like they will search for it, but if they turn on your computer and the first thing they see is your wallpaper is somehow illegal material (don't know how it could be), then they might do something about it.

I'm not talking about Asus specifically.. think 'nosy neighbors'.

It is up to the individual technician whether or not he/she feels obliged to report your illegal data to the proper authorities. In some states, it is the law for computer technicians to report any illegal material to the authorities and this seems to be the generally accepted protocol by most technicians now.

All in all, simply don't put any illegal content on your computer.

I recall there have been several child p**n (content filter) charges that have arisen from material that techs have found on computers they repaired.

There are laws that require people and hold them responsible to report illegal activities that harm other individuals such as children. I sure hope if you are doing something illegal you get caught.

If you're just talking about having a torrented copy of Spore then don't worry about it.
