Asus W3V
I keep getting thrown onto a blue screen in DOS-mode and white writing appears saying something about an ati2dgt or some name like that (Can't remember exactly) and says Windows has shut down to prevent further damage to my computer, it then does a scan and goes through a percentage loading screen then restarts.
What's wrong?
Also, I've tried to find an ATI driver for it but all I've managed to get is "HYDRAVISION", it doesnt seem like a driver to me, only a new application add-on or something.
Please help

This must be a common problem between Asus W3Vs? -
Surely....someone can help me with this?

You can try searching the forum for blue screen and ati, it should pull up quite a few posts. Its likely that it is simply a bad driver install...go to the ASUS website, and download the latest driver for your notebook. Make sure you un-install all ati drivers/control panels first...before you install the new ones.
Otherwise try omega drivers or modded ati ones, there are heaps and heaps of posts about these and the issues/advantages.

ps if the drive update doesnt fix the issue, try re-installing back to factory settings, if you still have problems then you may have a faulty gpu or m/b. In this case take the lappy back for repairs. -
Was I supposed to install ANYTHING when I first installed the laptop??

You don't have to install anything, but I can think of several priorities including:
1. Anti-virus software
2. All the updates and patches for Windows XP since the release of XP SP2. In theory, Windows Update should find these and you can start it from the Start > Programs.
3. Updated drivers and other software issued by Asus and available at http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us.
If you are on a broadband connection and don't have a local router then you are very vulnerable to catching nasties from the internet connection. The Windows patches will protect you from most of these (provided you don't catch them while you are on line getting the updates). Consider getting a better firewall. The basic, free, firewall from www.zonelabs.com is better than the Windows firewall.
Once you have taken these steps which will fix the known software bugs and give your computer better security then there will be a better foundation for sorting out any remaining problems.
