I just got an asus eee pc 1018p (merry christmas! haha) and im looking for ways to maximize its potential. i was thinking of getting an SSD if i could get a good deal - and im pretty set on getting 2 GB of ram (upgrading from 1 GB). can the motherboard support DDR3 or am i stuck with DDR2? and in either case, what ram is the fastest/best option for me to get?
and any other basic tips for a first time netbook user?
thanks!
EDIT: oh any direction in where to buy an SSD would be great too! I'm looking for something not too expensive, though in the 32 GB ~ 64/80 GB range. thanks again

Should be able to do DDR3, there's a thread on eeeuser here: 2GB RAM in the 1018P (Page 1) / Windows 7 / EeeUser Forum

looks like there are lots of difficulties and stuff with it and based on my research about RAM, this netbook uses the fastest DDR2...so I think I'll just stick with it instead of experimenting with marginally better tech. ordered this:
Newegg.com - Patriot 2GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Laptop Memory Model PSD22G8002S
now to decide on SSD's...any place to get a good deal? any thoughts in general? -

I have an intel SSD (had it for a year now), they came down in price recently since the 3rd gen stuff is due out very soon. I'd just go for the cheapest per GB unless you're concerned about power consumption.

ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
If the original board uses DDR2 RAM it was never, ever possible to use 200-pin DDR3 ram in a DDR2 slot. The notch in the ram types are in different positions, so one won't even fit on the other's type of slot.
There were a few desktop motherboards during the DDR3 transition that supported both -2 and -3 ram variations, but I don't recall ever hearing about a combo notebook system ... still, I could be wrong on the latter point. Ken @ GenTechPC would be a good authority on this.
The thread referenced by AuG discusses that Asus appears to manufacture two different variants of the 1018, each using a different RAM type. You very likely need to match the type of RAM to what's already there.
best ram to upgrade 1018p? DDR3?
