i bought a m2c a year ago, and the cpu temp. gets really hot w/o underclocking, 70-80 degrees at idle. Is it normal?
there's a black tape covering the vent(where air goes in) from the inside, should i remove it?
thanks

What is a M2C?
Anyhow, I would say if you are having heating issues and you have tape covering the vents, you would be quite safe to remove it.
Are you sure it is tape and not some dust filter? it is quite odd to have any vent covered? I would remove it. -
I guess I would remove it too... especially if it looks like it's BLOCKING the vent... that's a big no no!
NZwaverider - the M2C is a 14" Asus notebook... part of the M2 series. It was one of Asus's earlier notebooks... not totally beautiful like the current ones, but it was well built - very business-mindedIt was followed by the M3 series.

I have an M2N, its a very cool running notebook 40-50C ....nor can I see any tape covering any of the vents on my machine.....thus I would remove that tape asap....you should be able to use this lappie on your lap for hours without any probs.

that's what im concerning.
i think dust will go in if i take it out.
i wil post some photos later...
thks
by the way, will Arctic Silver 5 help decrease the temp? and will i void my warranty if i open up my cpu? -
dust does go in, but you can always blow out your fans with a can of compressed air. i'm not sure how easy the fans are to access in an asus, but on most laptops they're pretty easy. the negative of the dust does not at all outweigh the positive of the added cooling from removing that platic/tape stuff.
-
Artic Silver 5 won't help... at most, you'll see 1-2 degrees drop.
Arctic Silver only helps lower your CPU temp under heavy load... not idle. -
Fans are really easy to get out. 2 screws and its out
thanks for the fast replies -
Try taking out the CPU heatsink and the fan and see if they're clogged with dust like this person's Sager.
Looks like Asus taped up the bottom vent because the intake vent on the side was sufficient for airflow. -
Looks like the "tape" could be used to force air out the side instead of the bottom? could be wrong...
-
yeah i wouldn't take the tape off because it might disrupt the flow of air. Asus put it there for a reason. Since Asus is high on quality, I don't think they would have forgotten that a piece of tape was left on a vent.

With that type of fan I don't believe you should have problems with air coming back out. My guess is that either they decided to cheaply redesign the case by covering up a vent, or they want to keep things from sticking into the vent, say if you have your computer setting on the floor. And dust is always a possibility.
As far as artic silver, it helps reduce the contact resistance between the heat pipe and the chip. So, it will always help, but it is proportional to the how much heat your chip is producing.
If you want to reduce your CPU temperature, increasing your fan speed should help the most. If that is possible.
black tape on the vent shud i take it out? + heating issue
