I read here about some people piecing together Notebooks using the M6N chassis.
I figured I'd give it a shot, since I've been building Desktop Computers since the days of 3DFX video cards (My First complete system build had a voodoo 3500 w/TV tuner). I probably have built a total of 7 complete systems, networked them, upgraded components in them, etc. etc. So I figured piecing together a notebook couldn't be too much more complex.
I got an M6n case, a CPU, 1x512 DDR333, 40 GB Hitachi HDD, a CD-RW/DVD combo drive and I figured I'd hold of on a wireless card until I was ready.
First, taking that God damned keyboard is a f0keen nightmare, the likes Satan himself couldn't inflict on a human. I mangled the **** out of the aluminum backing for the keyboard, now it looks like a mountainous landscape; I couldn't pry that thing off for nothing. Eventually, It came off, but not without a hefty cosmetic cost. After taking it off, I saw that in fact, I was doing it as best as I could think of. That is, insert a small flat head screw driver at the top of the keyboard, to unlatch it. It took a great deal of force, but eventually I got it and the surrounding plastic off.
So I inserted the CPU, removed that sticker in front of the heatsink, screwed the heatsink down, turned the little CPU locking flathead screw to the lock position. I installed the RAM, on the side where the CPU is (instead of the back) and lastly, I placed the HDD on the little tray and the tray with HDD in it on the little compartment behind the battery.
I'm thinking, I'm all set with this tank of a disfigured notebook; at least it should f0keen work. So I plug in the power cord (I tried with and without the Battery inserted)
The thing powers-up, and the screen doesn't show a goddamned thing. I tried hitting the DEL key, the F2 key, the FN+LCD key, the FN+LCD/CRT toggle key and nothing is so much as twitching; only the blue light around the power button and the light that indicates power are on. Of course I DREAD having to take that goddamned mangled keyboard off again.
I have busted my butt, my patience up, and my wallet for this tank of a notebook not to work. I thought 5.6 lbs would be light, but even to the weight scale that notebook was closer to 7lbs...
I'm so terribly disappointed, and I'm out $1500USD, I want to kill myself. I don't even have a job at the moment, I'm a student. I wasn't prepared to fail setting this thing up, now I'm broke, and without the machine I was expecting to get homework done with. I hate it, and I hate myself for getting involved with it...
In any event, if you think you have some good suggestions on how to convince this thing to turn on, I would appreciate it.

I'm sure glad I spent the extra $40 to get the computer shop guys to put mine together [:0]
ASUS M6800Ne, P-M 1.5 Dothan, 512MB Ram, ASUS Combo drive, Samsung Spinpoint M 40G HDD with 8M cache, Mobility Radeon 9700 -
I'm pretty sure since nothing shows up on the screen, the cpu was not locked in correctly. I just recently put together my first laptop and I had exactly the same problem. I did't realize that one had to put quite a bit of force in order to lock the cpu in place. I know the socket is zero insertion force, but the screw certainly isn't. Just give that a shot. On my lappie, the screw socket actually had little icons of a lock. Maybe yours does too and they're just too small that you didn't notice them the first time around. Hope this helps[

I'm pretty sure I locked my CPU

Was there something I should have been looking for that tells me it's locked? Mine comes with a Die mark that's supposed to line up; and it does. And there is also a little nipple on the side of the screw that catches on the lip of the plastic that houses it, that's flush on the lock side.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015
