Ive been looking at getting a value 14" notebook from asus and ive come to look at the Z62F and the A8F
they both have roughly the same specs, so im wondering where the differences lie?
bettery life? build quality? weight?

Well, hard to say, as the 'Z' series doesn't really exist outside of the US, as it has been named to Zxxx by ASUS N.A. Best to compare the units as themselves and not the series

Their spec. is different. Z62F can be customized the parts such as cpu, hd memory. A8F is a ensemble model. If you would like to change the different parts of speed and brand, Z62F will give you more flexible option to choose what you need.

i am aware of this, however from the pics ive seen the chassis looks different, and im wondering how the two compare on build quality, with the specs equal

Up to now, no many z series models are in the market. You can focus on the 3d marks's video and cpu's benchmark for reference. Some comparsion of Core Duo and many of them for Pentium M is there:
