I know this maybe better in a civ specific forum but I believe its my machine and not the game.

Anyway so I am having this constant problem with the game crashing. For those that know the civ games it only happens between turns. Right before it happens the fans get super loud.

I have the game patched to version 3.13, I have only ever played in standard power mode as it seems to run ok.

my temps seem to be ok but I need to double check.

Has anyone else here had problems with the game?

    Cheers

    Sam

    Hi

just played for another 45 min or so then and no crash, gpu temps are around 90 degrees, but i have had them up around 100 before although not for long periods of time. My fans really do work over time playing this game though.

I should have mentioned before I have the mem saver enabled in the civ.ini file.

OS is vista with 2gig ram, no overclock, machine is on asus standard mode and vid card is default frequency.

    Bios is 801.

My brother has CIV. He's coming over tomorrow and I'll check it out on my C90S.
I would recommend a bios update. The most recent one is 902 I think.
Does the game just hang or do you get a BSOD?

    hey chris,

no bsod, game crashes straight back to os, vista reports the beyond the sword exe as the problem.

Thinking more about it though it seems like the system is maybe overheating or something.

I only play on the biggest worlds in civ and have quite a few other civs, graphics are maxed with 2 times aa on and the crashes don't appear until later in the game eg >1900s.

What do you guys think is the best way to update bios, I have only ever done it by downloading the bios file then using the asus update tool, but i read something about burning to a cd and restarting the computer and doing it, are the benefits to that method.

    Cheers for all the help

well I had problems with freezes of my gpu, because the energy options was on default and saved energy for nearly everything. I set all to maximum power.

if you are using vista maybe this helps you too

put those reg keys in your registry like described above in link. I set everything default except TdrDelay to 5.

    TdrLevel

    TdrDelay

    TdrDdiDelay

    TdrDebugMode

    maybe that helped

I am running the game right now and no crashes so far (about 30 mins).
I will try different settings and report back later.

Is there something specific you want me to try?

    hey chris,

not really, as i said the crashes don't really appear till later in the game, so you may have to play for quite a while, so don't be to worried about it if you have better things to do.

I am pretty sure if you have the beyond the sword mod you can do a late start which would mean you could start at a later date on an already developed map.

Just one thing though, how is your fan speed playing, my fans seem way louder playing this game then anything else i ever do.

Sleepydeath, I had wondered about that, I played for a while last night in gaming mode and it seemed to be ok, but I probably need a few spare hours to really test it.

I ran CIV IV the whole day without any crashes.
I tried it in Vista Ultimate 64Bit which gave me a warning about known incompatibilities but it still ran
without any problems and I tried it in Windows XP Pro 32Bit without any problems.
The only thing I noticed was that the fans were quite loud.
My GPU went up to about 90C but never more than that and my CPU was running at about 67C.

Sorry I couldn't be of any more help but I really tried all scenarios even overclocking with TurboGear,
applying patches and different settings but I just couldn't get it to crash.

    My test setup was:

4 week old install of Vista Ultimate 64Bit with current updates and current drivers form ASUS and 169.12 GPU driver with modded inf from laptopvideo2go.

New Win XP Pro SP2 32Bit install without current updates but with current drivers from ASUS and 169.09 GPU driver with modded inf from laptopvideo2go.

I tried the game for about 2 hours on every OS in standard mode and then I tried it with overclocking mode (2.76Ghz) on TurboGear for about 1 hour in every OS.

I even tried loading it in Gentoo Linux with Wine emulation layer but it wouldn't load :D

Unless your gpu is overheating, it's certainly not hardware. Have you checked your temps? My machine quit crashing in Vista when I started using Linux...it's always software/drivers absent overheating or faulty hardware.

guys thanks so much for all your help!

do you guys recommend a program for measuring cpu temps, im have just been resetting and looking in bios which is obviously not giving the temp and the moment of crashing.

I think i read that there is a new vid driver out? so ill give that a crack plus the latest bios.
