    c90s gpu cooling question

    i was looking at photos that vicious took and i noticed that the gpu was using the foam cooling thing

    ive seen that in the old dell inspiron 6000 when i was taking it apart to overclock and add artic silver 5 to cool

    would i beable to replace the foam in the c90s with artic silver 5 to drop the temp? ive noticed that it can make up to a 20*C difference on the cpu

    Yeah you can apply as5 on the heat sink plates.

    The GPU should be no problem. But you need to be very careful with the memory. AS5 is conductive. Placing it on the memory without any squeezing out and shorting out those little metal pins all around the memory chips is an unnecessary risk. Most people use AS5 on the GPU, and a non-conductive paste on the memory chips. I ordered some of the new (diamond content) paste that I will use on the GPU and memory as it is higher performing than AS5 and it is non conductive. I just ordered a tube at a very reasonable price from here :

    Remember you cannot reuse the thermal pads.

    I dont think you can use paste for the ram, nor do I recomend it. Unlike the gpu core that is totally flush against the heat spreader, the ram has a gap, thats why the pads are there to close that gap.

    You could probably bridge it with a generous amount of paste but a thin layer of it like your supposed to use would probably fall short, and if you did put enough it would be risky and not really give any cooling benifit that I can think of. If your really hellbent on inproveing the cooling to the ram, I suggjest getting high grade thermal pads to replace the stock ones. Also take note of the whole cooling setup in the first place, the gpu and the ram are not in direct contact with the heatsink, they have to pass the heat thru that dingy heat spreader, then thru more thermal compount, then it gets to the heatsink. So cooling efficantcy is obvously killed to some degree by that.

    Even as an enthusiast, who loves to overclock and push things to the max (im in top spots in alot of benchmarks) I can apprecate the complications present in a notebook and choose to not try to push the boundries much when it comes to overclocking and cooling. That hobby is much better reserved for desktops.

    All in all, if you really want max cooling, by far the best thing you can do is a good cooling pad that pushes air up thru the bottom vent where the southbridge and heatsink is, this will dramaticly lower temps of the whole system.
