Anyone who doesn't know Asus as a brand of anything (motherboards, graphics cards, notebooks, pocket pcs, wireless routers, etc) ....... you're never going to convince him of anything....... It's going to be hard to tell your father that they are better than dell... but the analogy to use is more like ford verses some exotic..... Some people think the destination is what it's all about... others know it's all about getting there....... It's all the small things that set them apart and for the most part, he's not going to grasp any of them.
This video is old, but the guy holding this S5 is to geeks as Tony Robbins is to depressed people.....
http://www.proportable.com/images/asf/techtv.asf
I wish there was more I could say.... -
lol at the video
It kinda looks like he was gonna chuck that s5 at some point, damn its small
Hmm, You can open up your comp and see what motherboard it is
But besides that, it's gonna be hard, unless you take him around all the B&M stores and ask about Asus. -
well is an Asus really THAT much better?
ive been looking around at laptops, and ive been looking at the asus z71v, gateway M460, dell i6000 and hp zv6000.. -
PROPortable Company Representative
Asus actually designs and builds their own machines....... that's something that no other company in north america can really claim...... The heart of a notebook is the motherboard and that's what is beyond the looks and the features that you can quantify.... Asus has won the best motherboard maker award from toms hardware I think 5-6 years straight and that is one of the things that make their systems so good.
Build quality is superior..... it's very hard to put most of their laptops on the same level with anything else as they don't always make something that is the same weight, dimensions, price, performance, etc as something else...
The Z71v is a good bang for your buck (highest performance we have, but cheapest build) .. it's a system for someone looking at those other bargin performance machines... but it's still a noch above them, just the lowest on the Asus ladder. -
are there any like well publicized reviews like cnet or anything like that?
-
Legit, legit???
Nowadays many notebooks are the same but with a different logo on the top. Yeah, sometimes the casing's different as well.
I got my old dell Inspiron 8100 stolen a couple of weeks ago, and the first thing my dad said was: "you know, dell has got som nice machines at an afordable price"
and truth be told, theres nothing wrong with the machines from dell, but they don't appeal to me, because they're often as thick as a 500 pg book.
To say it this way, I judge a laptop in a different way than my dad, and the case is probably the same with you.
My advise, buy the notebook you find most appropiate for you. Let your dad have a go at it, and I bet you he'll be convinced that Asus is quality once he sees it and gets the feel of it. If thats not a posibility, let him read the reviews, and oppinions which have convinced you.
Either way I hope you get the laptop you find best for you... -
With regards to reviews, theres plenty of pro- and user reviews of Asus machines. To make it short, some of Asus machines get hot under the right palmrest (HD), the fan runs quite loud (in some users opinions), and batterylifetime on some models are "only" average. But i would advise you to read the review yourself. Read up on the particular model before you decide...
You can easily find reviews on this site, and on other forums, but i'm not sure i'm allowed to mention names??? -

You know what, your father isn't going care if if Bill Gates calls him up and tells him Asus makes top end laptops. With that said, do some of your own searching.......
Bill Gates recently showed off what new laptops will be capable of when their new OS is launched in a year or so.... he demo'd Asus systems......
Intel paired with Asus to launch centrino... Asus' M3n was *THE* reference design model that intel showed off to all of the other computer makers to say... this is what you're going to want to start with....
Asus makes most of the sony vaios now...... the apple powerbooks.... will be making the new widescreen ibooks........
This is really a lose lose argument because anyone who thinks dell is quality when you start a conversation, won't understand anything that follows. This site's top post counts go to HP first, Asus second and Dell third.......... Considering everyone and their brother know HP and Dell, having Asus up there means a lot........ in general it means that all of us are here for a reason and Asus enthusiasts are much more knowledgable about systems than the typical computer buyer....... so it means there are are going to be a lot more indepth conversations going on here about more technical things. It's not going to mean anything to a naysayer though....
That S5n that Leo Laporte was holding on his Tech TV show went on Regis and Kelly about a week after that when Leo did his quarterly gadget report...... to some people that might be a *wow* factor........ All I got out of the deal were silly pictures kelly took of herself with a digital camera and downloaded to our system through the memory card slot on the air....... My parents certainly thought that was cool...... but like I said, if he's footing the bill and he's not open minded... you're dead in the water. -

Google is this guys friend..... there are reviews here, there and everywhere..... -
I saw information regarding this recently off of an ebay listing. I have no affiliation to this person at all, but I couldn't rightfully quote them without mentioniong their username, which is "asusnotebooks." His ebay rating is high, which gives him a little reliability, but I wouldn't be suprised if there was a little exaggeration in an item or two. I don't know enough about Asus to verify all these claims, maybe someone else can. Hope this helps convince your dad! This is according to the ebay seller:
Here are 10 Facts about ASUS:
ASUS is currently # 1 Motherboard maker worldwide.
ASUS VGA Graphics Cards are used by Nvidia at E3 2005.
ASUS is currently # 3 Notebook maker worldwide.
ASUS is placed on BusinessWeek for Top 10 fastest growing high-tech company in 2004.
ASUS is voted top 16th place on InfoTech100 in 2004.
Every 1 out of 3 PCs contains ASUS motherboards (including DELL and ALIENWARE brands).
ASUS make OEM notebooks for SONY, JVC, HITACHI, and APPLE (ibooks).
ASUS is the premiere OEM/ODM provider for APPLE, DELL, HP, IBM, and SONY.

That's not BS... it seems pretty accruate... they make notebooks for a lot more companies then are listed, but that gets the point across.

Open up a Dell and show him the motherboard.
As far as professional reviews. I know CNET did a review of the W3V.
Here are some reviews I know of:
The older M6: http://www.tomshardware.com/mobile/20040407/
The older S5: http://www.mobiletechreview.com/notebooks/ASUS_S5Ne.htm
Search Cnet Australia site for newer reviews, I think they have some. -

If you drop by a Borders or Barnes N Noble, you can grab a Laptop or MobilePC magazines and see if you can find any Asus. I remember that MobilePC did a review for the Asus S5 (long time ago), W5 (recently), Z71V (recently). Outrageous price laptop from Voodoo and Hypersonic also uses Asus barebones. It's very hard to prove Asus laptop quality to your dad or other people that never even HEARD of them before. The reason is Asus doesnt spend that much money on advertising like Dell. I mean come on, EVERYONE has heard of Dell (if you havent, you must live in a cave...lol) :asus: Dont :dell:

This on made me chuckle. At the rate dells rep is going down the drain they will within the next decade drop into the shadowns when their own odm recognizes that dell as a reseller sucks and they need to seel their product to oems outside of dell. THe thing about dell is their support blows. If you laptop breaks good luck with their rma dept. Their quality sucks too. If you think about it you can buy an asus laptop with more crank to it for 800$ or you can buy the cheapest piece of crap from dell for 100$ less. Dell captures by far the most uninformed consumers out of all the manufacturers. If you take randomly 1000 of dells customers and 1000 asus customers and test their IQ you will find that that by comparison asus deals with the einsteins of the world. I am not calling dell users stupid. I am saying that customers of asus are alot more seasoned users then dell. I personally would not buy a dell ever. Dont care how good the deal is. The better the deal the worse the quality. 8 out of 10 repairs we get in the store are dell. Does this mean dell sells 8 out of 10 sales in this world are dell computers? Certainly not, not even close. It just means dell quality is made up. The awards they get for best customers support is science fiction. If you are a Home user good luck proving to people their support is anything more then horrible. For business its a different story just like the price. How do you explain to your dad the difference between dell and asus resellers? Call dell home sales and ask the rep a really technical question like:
How far is the range on the wifi card?
What does centrino stand for?
What is the best video card out for laptops?
What is the average temp of this unit?
WHat is the max ammount of ram?
Basically anything that would involve direct knowledge of the product stuff that is not always written on a spec sheet. The call an asus dealer and ask the same questions. You will find asus dealers actually know what they are selling intimately while dell has a bunch of foreigners reading from a spec sheet. Other then that if you can stand the uglyness of dells machines and you dont mind the fact that they completely sold out overseas, and the fact that their reputation as a global company is worse then any other be my guest give em a try. You may save a hundred $$ but in the long run if you have problems you will never be back to them -
i read on another forum that the z70v will "the Z70V WILL be coming with the x700 GPU at the end of next month (July) or begining of August. "
could someone explain to me what exactly this means?
as in i heard the z70v has a better screen and whatnot and it would make it better than the z71v with that upgrade.. is this true? -
It says you can preorder them from here: http://istnc.com/store/products.php?cat=117
And this forum has been going nuts about them: http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=90659&page=1&pp=15 -

At least Asus build their own stuff.
-
alright so i convinced my dad to ask the IT guys at his work.. im sure they know about asus and will give good stuff about it

Here's a simple fact for you.... if the IT guys at your dad's work suggest Dell and don't know Asus...... they're completely worthless..... There are plenty of "IT guys" who simply buy and suggest Dell becasue Dell will come and fix their problems .... something you'd think the IT guy would be getting paid for, right? .... Anyway, that's honestly the sign of a real "IT guy" and a guy who went to school for "computers" because he liked playing video games.....
I hope your dad has an IT guy who's not the latter.... -
hopefully.. i mean the company has like 3-5 of them that seem to know what theyr doing
-

Well this is honestly the true test... if any of them never even heard of Asus..... I would never take advice from them about anything, regardless of the fact that their job says their qualified......

It's exactly like subbing the work you do everyday, out to someone else........ American's are getting dumber and dumber every day and want to work less and less. A guy who's hired and paid to take care of a companies systems and network...... should be able to do just that. I've been in situations where the IT guy was somehow also a dell onsite guy for his local area........ he actually did the work when it needed to be done, but he called up dell and told them they needed to do this and that, and then he'd get a call on his cell phone and was told to go to the place he worked.......... he was totally double dipping and I'd be surprised if he didn't just call randomly when things were slow just to keep himself busy. Now this was one of the smarter guys... he knows and loves Asus too, but in this situation, he's honestly doing the job he was paid for but found a way to screw the giant company at the same time....... I don't condone it, but you've got to admit, someone wasn't doing their homework and it's borderline genius.
-
........ well for some reason the head IT guy doesnt know much about it.. and he referred my dad to one of the other guys
-
PROPortable Company Representative
"doesn't know much about" what? Asus or Asus notebooks... becasue honestly, IT guys worship Asus like a religion....
-
well it looks like im not going to be getting an asus.... the other IT guy told him it was a low end laptop and suggested dell, HP, or toshiba
-
PROPortable Company Representative
Wow, well there's no end for stupid people in this world..... Where are you located by the way, I'd almost like to give these idiots a crash course in quality..... low end... they're probably raping the company dry with his lack of true knowledge of the tech industry.... what a shame.
-
"Low end"? And he suggested a Dell?
Oh well - have fun with your Dell.
Why not just have your dad read the forums - hey, look at resellerratings:
Dell: http://www.resellerratings.com/seller1867.html
and then try Asus dealers:
ISTNC: http://www.resellerratings.com/seller9617.html
ProPortable: http://www.resellerratings.com/seller5631.html
Startech: http://www.resellerratings.com/seller2549.html
There's more, but I gave you a good start.
Good luck! -
PROPortable Company Representative
That's one way of putting... you can only do so much when someone else holds your money..... The world isn't full of smart people and Dell will continue to have a large customer base as long as the people in the positioning of knowing what's good, have a limited or distorted view of reality.... long live unupgradable, throw away, "average" notebooks.........
-
PROPortable Company Representative
I'm sorry buddy.... Tell your father in a year or so when the notebook he makes you get starts falling apart and doesn't live up to your expectations anymore...... that you want a new one. Maybe then you'll either be able to buy your own notebook, or he might have smartened up......
Good Luck. -
i kinda thought the funny thing was that my dad said the tech guy said that notebooks will often start to break down a little and get a company that offers a good warranty
-
PROPortable Company Representative
He's saying .... don't take care of your notebook and get accidental damage insurance from someone like dell....... they start to break down because they're meant to be replaced within two years........ I believe I heard the average turnaround between when someone buys a new dell to when they buy then next one to replace that first one... is within a two year period....... I guess you get what you pay for, but it's not even like dell would be a lot less expensive for a similiar system... they're just build like crap becasue you can't quantify durability (although those dell commercials showing their "test labs" certainly try to tell you they're better)... the truth is, if dell made a better system it would be more expensive....... all that can get money for is the followings......... speed of cpu, amount of ram, size of hard drive, size of screen........ that means that it could be a P4, w/ 1gb of regular ddr, 100gb hdd at only 4200rpm's and a 15.4" screen at only WXGA........ it's something they've been doing for years and people will compare a system like that to something that we might offer that to them....... those initial specs seem the same......... Dell can't sell people on the expense of say, carbon fiber...... or the expensive of 7200rpm hard drives (expect for these crazy expensive XPS')....... people buying centrino systems from them still for the most part don't know why they should get a "slower" cpu over a p4......... 99% of the public is computer illiterate and the all mightly dollar is all that matters at the end of the day................
... some people.. right? -
hehe... honestly... i've always said that google is a man's best friend...
you should post this same question asking people to compare dell's to asus and see how many people will take up arms to defend dell's like they have here at asus... hehe... that should be interesting.
if you're gonna be stuck with mainstream i'd say go with an Acer, toshiba, fujitsu or HP (kinda shady areas), but I think you'll at least be somewhat happier w/ their user friendliness than a dell. seriously. try to avoid dell. -
You could let ASUS and Dell have a google fight.
http://www.googlefight.com/index.php?lang=en_GB&word1=Asus+notebook+bad&word2=Dell+laptop+bad -
i was kinda thinking gateway m460 or m680
i should just say give me $1500 and let me spend it how i choose but that wont happen -
PROPortable Company Representative
Tron, no offense... but how old are you?
-
i am 18 yrs old
why do you ask? -
PROPortable Company Representative
I was just asking because the younger you are, obviously the more you're going to have to listen to your parents.... I'd say even if he was paying for it, but say... you were in college...... I'd suggest you give him a hard time and tell him to let you make your own "mistakes" ... but as long as you're living under his roof, it's probably his way or the highway...... and in your case, a POS notebook is better than none at all....... afterall, it's his money and as sad as it is to say.... one day you'll be able to tell him you told him so...... either when the computer he makes you buy turns out to die in a year or something....... or when he finally does read an awesome review about Asus or finds someone at work bring one in...... that'll be the day, right?
-
A great way to convince your dad besides data and facts, give him a first hand experience of a true Asus product. Nothing can ever beat a first hand experience. Now comes the hard part, finding someone who lives near by and would actually let your dad to feel the laptop. :asus: the epiphany of all notebooks. If you live near by a reseller/dealer that is better.
-

I thought I asked that and I didn't get an answer in an earlier post.... I already thought about that and would consider a mercy on site demonstration if I knew more about his father.......... If he can't appreciate quality and design and thinks "name brands" are everything...... then it wouldn't even be worth it.... but if he's open minded and is willing to except the fact that his IT guys probably aren't worth the chairs they sit in all day..... then this kid could be saved...

TronCarter123, actually, if you need a laptop for school, you can get a very decent ThinkPad for $1500 with an educational discount... - these are sometimes comparable to the EPP discounts on select models.
I'm sure your Dad has heard of the IBM's reputation...
