Parallel ATA and Serial ATA are different standards for connecting the hard drive to your motherboard and transmitting data. The main difference is in the connectors:

Parallel ATA uses parallel communication (similar to an old style printer port) to transmit data, which results in a large ribbon cable of limited length. Serial ATA uses serial communications (similar to USB) to transmit data, allowing for faster transfer and thinner, longer cables.

Your Z96J has a Serial ATA controller for its hard drive, so you will have to buy a SATA drive. There is no room in the drive bay for any kind of PATA->SATA adapter, and doing so would remove the space and speed benefits of SATA anyway.

Jumper is exactly correct, each notebook supports Either PATA or SATA, and SATA being the newer and better technology, and that's what the Z96j uses.

The difference between SATA and PATA is suppose to speed, but many users will not feel the difference in hard drive speeds unless there's a spindle speed increase.

For example a 5400rpm SATA and a 5400rpm PATA, the SATA is suppose to transfer data faster but you can't really compare or notice it unless you have the exact same laptop with different controllers.

But you will notice a difference from 5400rpm to 7200rpm in both SATA and PATA, and generally this speed increase helps with Load times of programs games and other related applications.
