    Hi All,

I'm planning to purchase the Z70V at some point this summer, and it has been reported to have Azalia sound. Try as I may, even with copious amounts of googling, I can't find any satisfactory information on WHAT Azalia means. Why does everyone say that the Z70V has excellent sound?

    Basically, I have 2 bottom-line questions:
    1. is Azalia high enough quality that I won't notice imperfections with headphones?
    2. I want to use a 5.1 speaker system with my notebook. Will this be possible with Azalia or would I need an external soundcard?

    Thanks,
    Sandeep

Azalia is Intel's code name for "Intel High Definition Audio". For complete info, here's a link to Intel's description: http://www.intel.com/design/chipsets/hdaudio.htm

and in answer to your questions, YES[ :D]

Wow, so I don't have to spend an extra $110 to get a Creative Audigy NX? Thats fantastic news.

the other thing you need is an SPDIF port, and the Z70v has that, too, so you're set! :)

Ohh, wait a second... I should clarify a bit.

I'm going to purchase the Logitech X-530 5.1 speakers... and they require 3 inputs... I don't know what they're called, the same kind that're on headphones.

One for the center channel, one for the rear speakers, and one for the front speakers... so on a soundcard, it'd plug into three slots.

Does this mean I'll still have to get the external? Or is there a way to configure it such that this'll still work with the Z70V?

    edit: Here's a picture showing what I unfortunatelly cannot explain [ :D] http://img140.echo.cx/my.php?image=x530connections4rh.jpg

    Thanks,
    Sandeep

Essentially SPDIF (Sony/Phillips Digital InterFace) provides a digital signal encompassing multiple channels. Speakers are analogue devices so somewhere the digital signal needs to be converted to an analogue one. Some speakers have DACs (Digital to Analogue Converter) built in so you can get away with plugging them directly into the notebook.

Your speakers don't seem to have this capability so you will need either an external notebook soundcard that gives analogue ports, or possibly an amplifier with similar capabilities. I'm no expert here, but I don't think most amplifiers take the typical headphone type cable as a digital input.

thats right... a simple dolby digital decoder would be needed if logitech isn't including it with those speakers....

All the s/pdif is going to do is provide a means of tranport from the high def audio chip to and external decoder... you couldn't do that without s/pdif....... so you can't get digital sound out of a headphone jack that is just meant for stereo.

    Thanks,
    Justin
