I've been wondering about this one as well. The manual that came with my notebook says that I will be asked when I play a DVD about which region I want but I tried playing Spiderman the other day to see what movies would play like and I wasn't asked anything about regions.
Maybe I'll get asked when I try to play a DVD from another region or maybe I wasn't asked because I used a player (Jetaudio) other than the ASUS dvd software that came with the notebook.

whoops, forgot to mention, i don't have the w7j but I imagine the DVD parts won't be too dissimilar.
I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong though

I think that only the DVDs have region encoding which can be removed with certain dvd ripping programs. (e.g. AnyDVD, DVDdecrypter...).

However, I'm n00bie when it comes to the hardware aspects...

I'm sure all dvd's play on "computer". Well been using PowerDVD for ages and never had a regional problem on any computer. I have tons of Asian DVD's.

It all depends what drive you have. If you have a TSST drive then you can fool it with DVD region killer etc.... but if you have a matsh!ta then you cant. They just change the region for you without asking! and cant be fooled :(
