I just got my W3J from Gentech aka www.1toppc.com, with Intel Dual Core T2500 2.0GHz/667 CPU, and 2 Gb of RAM, two days ago. It worked perfectly, though I had few issues with hibernation/stand-by: sometimes I had to restart, to bring the computer back on. So yesterday I closed the lid and had the AC adapter pluged in. Came back about 2 hours later, the computer was in Hibernation/stand-by (whatever it is set to do by default). I tried to bring it back on by pressing keyboard keys, when that failed, tried holding the power button for 5 seconds as it says in the instruction. After all that it was still in stand-by, I could still feel the warm air coming out of the went, and it refused to turn off completely. Next I pressed the Shut Down botton on the bottom and it turned off. I waited a bit and pushed the power botton to turn it on, but nothing happened. I tried holding the power button for various periods of time-didn't help. Also there is smth. weird about the AC adapter. When it's plugged in to the power source only, the green light is bright and steady, but the moment I plug it in to my W3J the light goes dim and starts blinking. Is it the adapter that is causing the problem? I don't know. But the battery should have had enough power left even if the adapter broke. Also I tried taking off the battery and starting it with the AC adapter plugged in-no reaction whatsoever.
I have no idea of what is going on, and ASUS support is closed till monday![]()
Every bit of help will be greatly appreciated. Thanx

I'm not going to lie to you, that sounds very bad. It sounds like your power supply zapped some of your internals. You've tried everything I would've:
-unplug AC adapter
-remove battery with AC adapter power only
-holding power button for different amounts of time
Try contacting Gentech, as they might have some ideas. I hope someone else can give you better news... sorry. -
your power supply deffinately sounds faulty, but also make sure it is plugged into a sound wall socket, maybe try another power outlet and make sure everythnig is plugged in properly.
Also disable the HDD time out to never in all of the power4gear profiles (while runing on battery) that should fix your standby and hibernation issues.
It worked for me! sometines you have to pulll the plug and the bettery (so the laptop has no power) then plug back in and restart.
but your power supply does not sound good. -

Gentech has great service, contact them.
They have offered to replace my S96J for a minor minor problem, I said no, because it really doesnt bother me. They are great! -
Thanks for help guys.I already checked all the connections and tried different power outlets like 10 times. Also e-mailed Gentech, waiting for a response.

ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
On the W3v series, there is a little hole underneath that is a system reset; it's next to the HD door. As I understand, it's supposed to work like the reset buttons on the palm/WinCE handhelds - take a paperclip or toothpick and push it in until the button clicks.
I don't know whether this was included on the W3J model - Asus kept the same chassis design, but made a few little changes (like battery connector placement). Check your hardware/software manuals for details if there is that little hole, with a icon next to it that looks like I>O<I. If it's there, you might try this to force a restart.
Standby issues were addressed by the BIOS that was just released for the W3J in the past couple of weeks. Do a search and you should find the thread on this. -
Yes, there is a little hole on the bottom, in the manual it's called the "Shut Down button". As I said in my original post: I pushed it to turn off the laptop when it refused to come out of standby by any other means. Then I pushed it few more times while trying to reset/restart/bring the laptop back to life. Still can't power it up o_0

You may want to use a voltmeter to compare the output of your adapter with the factory specs.
These are the specs from the Asus website:
AC Adapter
Output: 19 V DC, 3.42 A, 65W
Input: 100— 240V AC, 50/60Hz universal
*Note* Be careful! If I'm not mistaken, it only takes 2Amps to kill a man regardless of the voltage. It's pretty simple, but if you're not sure what to do, get someone else to do it for you. -
I am having the same problem with my W3V. I have sent it in once to fix a power button issue already, and in the process of sending it back again with the same problem after 5 months of normal operation.
What works for me is open the screen to the widest, press and hold the power button and gently move the screen forward and back. -
I sent it to Asus last week, they didn't give me any update on what is going on with it yet. Hope I can have it back soon.

wow. I will definately stay away from the w3j. Hopefully the s96j isnt like this.

This happened to me. The first morning that I went to turn on my new W3v, it wouldn't turn on (it had gone into hibernation overnight). I'm not quite sure what I did to get it to turn back on (try leaving it for a bit with no battery and no a/c connected), but since then it's been fine, though a few days later (after I was satisfied the problem seemed to be gone), I did swap the HD and re-installed everything from the recovery disk on the new HD.
I hope it works out for you. -

It does sound like a power supply, which can happen to anyone, with any kind of computer.... At least they're taking care of it..
On another note...... I'm not sure what it is, but while most people have minds of their own and like to bring in a broad prospective of reviews and opinions..... This forum gets more posts like the above saying they'll stay away from a product because of a single post about a single issue...... I'd like to think Asus owners and potential owners are smarter than that, especially given the 15-16 months or more of reviews of W3's and pure units sold around the world with no remotely bad reviews. I don't know if it's just a passing comment of if a single person's bad power supply can swing someone away from such a great notebook...... but if you were looking at the W3 and this pushed you to an S96, you don't know the mistake you're making. You'd never regret it though, unless someone you knew ended up getting a W3 and you got to see it never to an S96.......
I'm just suggesting that everyone take in a lot more than a single passing comment before you go out and buy anything. Asus has a great record for everything they make and if you go look up some very successful computer companies, you'll find a great number of people who will love a certain model and say it's the best thing on earth..... but you could also find the same number of people who had the polar opposite opinion... yet people will still buy them. When literally a handful of people have even the most remote problem out of 1,000's sold... that's a very good ratio. Educate yourself and your notebook purchase will be all that much more satisfying. -
). i still think i made the right choice in my laptop, it's a killer machine, i just happened to get a bad part, these things happen to any notebook made by any manufacturer. please, do not be turned off of a w3j, it is superb, as is asus.
also, that ac adaptor is at the very least used on the z70va as well, and probably a number of other asus models. so don't worry about the w3j having a lower quality power supply, or whatever. -
I got my W3J back from Asus on wednesday. They replaced the motherboard and laptop is working well. I guess it was just me been so unlucky to get the one with a faulty motherboard, you know **** happens, no one can ever give you a 100% guarantee for all their products. Regardless of the problem, I am still happy that my choice landed on W3J-this laptop is a powerhouse(and I though my desktop was fast :^) Asus customer service is inconsistent: when I first called, the notebook support guy didn't help much, so I called again, and this time the other person was much more help, he listened carefully and suggested to sent my W3J in. I needed my notebook back fast (gonna be traveling soon), so I had to call Asus quite a few times and nag them a bit, to speed up the process, they were nice about it and looks like it is a common practice that you can "push" the repair if it is really urgent. In total it took under a week to get my laptop fixed: shipped it out on thursday using "standard overnight" (shipping label kindly provided by Asus, so didn't cost me a dime), it got to Asus on Friday, On Tuesday they shipped it back, I got it on Wednesday! Gotta thank FedEx for great work too
So people, do a little more research. I've done enough myself before I bought a W3J, hence I'm satisfied with my choice and even though this laptop is not perfect and has it's own small issues (not talking about my own problem, 'cause it's pretty uncommon), no other notebook would be perfect either, they all have strong and weak points.
Also thanks to everyone for the advise.

I also have the standby/hibernation issue on my W3J.
I have solved the problem as I found out what caused the
problem (at least in my computer).
Please read my thread yesterday entitled "I have found
what caused standby/hibernation....".
The solution was simple and does not require you to reload
XP. -
Yeah I just got my W3V back today too. The 1st time around they changed the motherboard.. this time around they changed the powerbutton cable. Hopefully the problem doesnt come back again.

I had the same power problem with my AJ7c. Was "on" but the screen was dead. After restarting everything was completely dead. They never told me what the problem was.
can't turn my W3J back on
