I have an asus M5N laptop. Within a couple of days, the trackpad started to get shiny from oils on my skin, and now after a month, I've noticed that the case next to the trackpad, where my palms rest most of the time, is getting shiny as well. (it's normally a black, matte finish). I can't tell whether it's something in the matte finish that is rubbing off, in which case it's presumably permanent, or whether it's the oils on my skin making it just look shiny, in which case perhaps it can be cleaned. Any ideas on how to clean it?
(I probably should have left on the asus sticker that took up much of the space next to the track pad as it would have protected the case. Now I have a worn-off finish there, plus I'm worried that I won't be able to get the proper warranty either!! But the rest of the case has asus branding on it, and I did, I think, keep the sticker somehwere, so I hope I'm OK on that front...)

I took the sticker off mine and when it needed servicing I had no probs at all. As long as you have your receipt you'll be fine!
You could try some alcohol base cleaner (eg methanol), this usually works well as removing stuff from plastics.

If you ever need new case parts, like the lid, palmrest, etc, we always have extras for repair work. The M5 is much tighter and much more of a problem than it's worth most of the time... but if the touchpad goes bad on you, just know that it can be replaced.
In case anyone else is reading... I always suggest if you want to get rid of our year or two old notebook, we have the parts to make it look and work like new agian. If you ever want to pawn your old notebook off on a nephew or someone, you could keep the notebook looking great, but the polished up palm rest and keyboard are always a sure sign. If you put $100 in parts into the notebook, I bet you could get another $300 out of it if you were to ebay it or something like that.

thanks, good to know they could be replaced if needed. But that makes it sound like it's actually something in the finish that's wearing off, then? Otherwise could they not be cleaned with something?
I'll try the methanol cleaner and see what that does. It's not a problem, shiny patches, I just like it to look nice... I'd rather it be all shiny than just shiny in patches!! -

Well, just so you know, on the M5 and (W1/S5/M6/M3/ and some others), the touch pad is mounted under something else. So like.. on the M5, the piece on top isn't actually the touchpad. There is a thin piece of material that your finger responce actually goes through to reach the touchpad. No one can notice.. but it allows them to match the touch pad in color and material to the rest of the computer. So, really... no matter what that touchpad looks like.. it shouldn't have an effect

Yes, but that's not the point. I'm not complaining about how it works. I want to know how to keep it looking good. And not by replacing the case, if possible, but for a long term solution.

Well, thats just my point. The piece that you touch is painted the color of the case...... just like you can rub the paint off of the palm rest area. They have these neat little stickers for the S5's that have little designs on them and they are supposed to work like screen protectors on a pocket pc. When they get grimy, just replace them.
So, cleaning it is one thing, restoring it to new is another.

can you give me a link to these stickers? not for the touchpad (I don't mind so much about that, as it's by not all shiny so it looks OK), but stickers for the palm rest would be cool. I assume the S5 is the same size as the M5. If you can't give me a link to them, can you tell me what the correct name for them is, so that I can search for them??

I'd like to know where to buy them, especially in the UK, though I'd consider ordering from the US, as if they're just stickers, they can't weigh too much. And it's the stickers I'm interested in - not the whole replacement cases, so any details about them etc would help.
I'm interested in the ones for the palm rest - not the touch pad. It's the irregularly shaped shiny patches next to the touch pad that are annoying me.
Are they some sort of accessory made by asus, or another brand?
thanks. -

Actually.. it's an accessory that comes with the S5... It's one of those accessories that we can't get otherwise... you could buy them from an S5 owner who probably doesn't even know their unit came with them.

Right, thanks, I'll check into that.
Can you confirm that there were not just stickers for the touch pad (which also came with the M5), but stickers for the whole palm-rest area, which is what I am specifically looking for?

No, they were stickers, as I stated.... they cover up the touchpad.... they don't come with the M5 in the states because it's sold as a barebone... but I guess you would have gotten those too....
Your thread is about cleaning the track pad... so I thought thats what you're looking for....
Are you trying to tell me that your palms are "polishing" up the palm rest? If so, the best solution is for you to replace the top case every 8 months so.... thats what I do when my palms start making the palmrest shinny.

Ok.. well that "shine" is you polishing up the paint on the palmrest.. you won't get rid of it unless you replace them.
