I received my G1S notebook yesterday and I have just finished setting it up. So far everything is working perfectly and I really love this notebook.Having read the threads about the G1S over the past month, I just wanted to give my initial impressions. Some individuals have said that the G1S is gaudy because of the green lights on the side of the lcd display. I have to disagree, I think they are a nice addition. Also the ASUS logo on the front to me isn't distracting. In fact I think this is one of the best notebook designs I've ever come across. Maybe it's because i'm a big fan on the black accents and glossy nature of this notebook.

Also I have 3Gb of RAM installed and I am not having any problems with the system recognizing both SODIMMS.

I did uninstall ASUS live update and Nortons because of the recommendations on this forum and i have no regrets so thanks to everyone for their input. As for the weight of this notebook,I find it to be lighter than my dell inspiron 8500 that i used to carry around in a backpack.

Finally I would like to thank Ken at GenTech for supplying me with this fantastic notebook which i will enjoy for a long time.

one quick question, my current display driver is version 7.15.11.08.

Is there an updated driver for the 8600GT and if so should i install it from ASUS or nvidia. Are there any differences between the 2 driver sets

thanks in advance for your response

I'm pretty sure you can't install drivers directly from nVidia. You'll have to use Asus drivers, or get modded drivers.

Yeah you cannot. I tried it and nVidia's update program said it could not find any compatible drivers for my hardware.

    Why is this?

Is there a performance difference between the modded drivers and the ASUS driver?

Sometimes, but there is usually some wonkiness with modded drivers.

Because the notebook manufacturer locks out any drivers but their own from installing normally. You have to get a modded INF file, from laptopvideo2go or somewhere similar, and then you can install the latest nVidia drivers.

Yeah, it is kind of lame. Most gamers I know use modded drivers, as they often provide huge increases in real-world performance.

Perhaps... but be aware that sometimes modded drivers can cause serious problems (like the infinite loop of restarting on the W3J).

I don't know much about changing drivers around to find the best one, nor do I really keenly want to spend my time on this lovely machine running benchmarks in games I'd prefer to PLAY...

however, I checked my drivers against those on the Asus update page for the G1s, and I have the latest drivers they do, which look to be more recent than yours - 7.15.11.119. Go have a look there to get those, unless someone here has a reason for you to not do so.

I installed the latest drivers from the ASUS website and it now matches yours. Thanks for the info.

I am now playing WoW and it's fantastic. Been waiting to play burning crusade for a while and now i can

I am looking for a notebook cooler for my G1S. Circuit city no longer has the Antec cooler in stock but they have a Targus model. does anyone have any experience with targus notebook coolers?

I am using a Targus Notebook cooler (the new version, it is black instead of silver) and I love it. It does the job by keeping air moving and the notebook is definitely cooler.

I don't recommend anything made by Targus, except for their backpacks. Go hit up newegg.com and checkout some of the feedback on Targus coolers.

to each his own. i cant say there is anything about the g1s that i like but i am biased. i have seen all asus notebooks. this is not one where "style" is written all over.

True, it isn't that stylish of a notebook. However, I have seen much worse in terms of looks. I am much more concerned with the hardware and in that respect the G1S is a great machine.
