did you use the restore cd's from asus or just an XP disk???
if xp then go thru the ASUS drivers cd and install everything...then check computer management for any ? marks....its likely that your just missing some drivers...if this doesnt work try using the restore cds/partition on the hdd. This should restore the lappie back to shipping condition with a clean version of xp...the other bonus is that its heaps quicker than doing a fresh install from XP disk.

Pop in the ASUS Driver & Utility CD, then install everything from top to bottom. (excluding the Syanptics driver, download it from the Synaptics site, the ASUS one is a bit buggy).

A better idea is reinstall all the drivers one by one. After finishing a driver installation, restart the windows and install a next one. Probably, your audio driver is missing or have a conflict with another driver or software.

I wiped and installed xp pro clean on my a8jm and went through and installed all the drivers in order from the asus cd and everything works perfectly, not that it is much faster than before, it was pretty clean from asus, but now I have my pro install instead of home

This is copied from a previous post of mine, but it applies here too:

Get a copy of WinDriver Ghost, and use it to collect all your drivers from the existing Windows install, before you reformat. Save them to a cd, or external drive. Then after you format, you can point windows to the external source for the drivers. Use the 'Fast Collect' method to only backup drivers not supplied with Windows.

I do this on every computer that I format.

The program allows you to try it for 15 days, but since you're using it right before you format, this doesn't matter.
