I know there are some people out there that don't like glaretype displays, but I can assure you that unless you're in office with completely disproportionate lighting, your feelings towards glaretype displays are probably based either cheap glaretype displays or horrible viewing conditions.... or worse yet, a mix of both (like a gateway at bestbuy).

A glaretype display is really superior in every way over a matte type display from brightness and contrast to color reproduction and viewing angles. Yes a matte type display from an old Z70va can be put on the Z96j's, but to pay a lot more for a cheaper screen isn't something I'd suggest until you actually see what screens we have on the Asus models because your opinion most likely isn't based on what they have. Most people say they can't deal with the reflections - and if that is your problem with them, you're dealing with cheap screens........ Asus screens have anti reflective coatings (when the screen is off of very dim it will reflect like a mirror), however, during use, the backlights are all very, very bright and the key to having a good screen is to counter act the ambient light. If you can match or exceed it, it'll be the nicest display you've ever used... Two things that are important in doing that are again the coatings on the screens and the high level of backlight.,

Strange, I was just wondering if there was a difference between the different glare type screens. The majority of my experience with glossy displays comes from places like Best Buy and Futureshop with their HP, Gateway, Toshiba display models. The glare from those screens is just down right horrible in everyway. The only difference I have noticed is with Sony and their glossy displays. Sony's glossy LCDs seem to have a much more CRT look to them with the reflections being a deep shade of blue rather than a true reflection. Now I did get a chance to see a few ASUS models in A&B sound the other day, but to my dismay, the lighting was actually "good". So it was very hard to get a feeling for how well they would handle bad lighting situations - sunlight, 10 million fluorescent lights over your head ect ect.

It would be nice to be able to get a side by side compairison of an ASUS and a Gateway glossy, but I doubt you will ever see them both being sold by the same store anytime soon. :)

Well two things - one the lighting in a bestbuy is horrible for comparison of screens... that's problem number one.... the other is that hp and gateway at least don't have the best glaretype displays.... Sony, Fujitsu and Asus are higher end in that regard.

A good glaretype display is supposed to replace a good crt monitor - that's the fact about them.. and in certain conditions, the best crt monitor is still going to give you a bit of a reflection if it's brightness is turned down and the ambient light is high.

I will have to give the ASUS laptops another look then. If the glare on them is comparable to a CRT then I think I could live with it. Since I am in the market for a 14.1 inch gaming laptop, ASUS certainly seems to give me the best options for that catagory.
