No it is a strong single gpu. It has more pipelines in it's single gpu than in both 8700m's sli'd.

No you will not be able to fit a second GPU into the G51. However, there really is no need seeing as how the single GTX260 outperforms dual 8700 GTs. Go with the Asus.

the sli 8800s are a bit better on games that support sli. Are you compairing an used xps 1730 to a new g51? Price of each? Cpu info?

No there are not asus 280m's available to upgrade with yet. Also laptop gpu upgrades cost A LOT! It would be wise to get a gpu you like from the get go on whatever machine you buy.

Only if Asus releases a GtX 280m since they use a proprietary card. even if they did, there are already heat concerns in the G51 with a GTX 260m, so the heat from a 280 may be more than the colling system can handle.

260m* and it all depends on what your temps are like when you get it.

Haha, don't get over your head, winfieldblue. Technically you are correct. The GTX 260M the same as the GTX 280M, but lower clocked and 16 of the shaders are physically severed by laser. Moreso, the Asus contracted GTX 260M is further underclocked by 10% compared to Nvidia's reference clocks for the GTX 260M.

If your GPU temperatures are starting to touch into the red zone, then pull back on the overclock.

    XPS m1730 with SLI 8800GTX's/9800GT's > Asus G51

Of course, it's a heck of a lot bigger.

I like the fact that the G51 is portable... Just looked at the review for the M1730 on here. The adapter alone is almost the size of a small laptop. >.>
