    did asus upgrade to windows 10 instead of clean install?

    I see a "Windows.old" folder in my new windows 10 notebook.

    it has the same size as the Windows folder.

    did asus just upgrade windows 8 on these notebooks instead of clean installing windows 10?

    That's still a clean Windows 10 install but also Windows 8 it is saved just in case that you want to revert back to W8. Otherwise you can clean that folder by doing a disk cleanup.
