I finally got around to reformatting my Asus U31 laptop from a bootable USB drive (did not have cd drive), but when it was done, my display defaulted to 800x600. I adjusted the resolution, but 1024x768 was the highest resolution possible, as opposed to the 1360x768 from before. Everything is stretched horizontally now. What's going on and how can I fix this?

You need to install the drivers for your laptop's hardware, specifically the video drivers to fix the resolution issue.

Go to the Asus support website, find your specific model, and then from there you should be able to download drivers. You do not need to download all of them, but make sure to get the video drivers at a minimum to allow you to get the proper resolution.

I don't even have network adapters on the freshly installed os... is this normal? The folder "network connections" is completely empty, not even local connection available. I used the X17-58997 iso, which should be the most recent one?

everything you see is normal. You have to download whatever drivers are missing from the Device Manager.

Everytime I start the computer, a black screen appears asking me to "choose an operating system to start, or press TAB to select a tool: windows 7, or windows 7"... did the reformat go wrong?

Also, no video driver exists for my model (U31SD), only intel graphics drivers...

intel graphics drivers = video drivers. get it.

did you install the OS on a different partition?
if not, then you didn't delete and reformat the original OS partition.

you can get rid of that black screen by going to Start>Run>msconfig >boot tab, delete the duplicate windows installation.

thanks, that answers a few questions. But the U31SD also comes with Nvidia GT520 graphics, for which there is no driver listed (only intel hd available)...
