i have the m5n, and i really hope you don't get it, when i put it at 1700mhz, it can reach temps of 92C and it basically burns you, at 600mhz, it reaches temps of 70C, which is still pretty hot, i took it back to the distributor and they replaced some parts however its still hot, it is just a waste of time dealing with these people, they don't care about you, and you won't end up with a good m5n, because thats not possible, so stay away at any cost

You had to bump a thread that is a year and a half old to tell someone not to get a notebook that has been EOL for the better part of a year? Really...

... there you go... we tell people to use the search function... and this is what they come up with. Do you think this guy who asked the question a year and a half ago has just been waiting on the edge of his seat for an answer? That's a waste of a post.

Asus has a new fan for these notebooks...
here is what ASUS Technical Helpline person John Y just sent us:
"We have new CPU cooling fan for M5N model laptop, if you want change it, let me know please. By the way, according to our records your unit is already out of warranty, we might charge for the replace."
If the unit had no overheating problem then why did ASUS redesign the cooling fan for it? In my book that is an admission that these units have a problem. The fact is that running a 12" fan beside the unit had the effect of bringing it back to life many times, in the world of science that is a direct correlation, apply cooling: machine runs again. One other problem we have had is that the small battery died after about 1 year, despite following ASUS corps. instructions to recondition the battery it will not hold a charge any more, so we use the large battery.

Like i said to you on notebookforums. You relaly need to do some research before you jump to conclusions. I being an owner of an m5n and it being pretty popular in its time do know what i am talking about. On a flat surface with maximum load it can reach to almost 90C without undervolting. That being said 90C is acceptable and will not damage the notebook nor will it cause any bluescreens or restarts. The fan design on the z33 is the new fan. The reason for it was simply becuase the old one was loud. If you want to get misleading information look elsewhere. If you want to talk to someone who knows what they are talking about you can talk to my self of justin here. In my one pinky i have more knowledge about this notebook then asus has in their entire support team. Please listed to what i tell you. The notebook has no inherent heat issues. They never did. The m5n was produced with an exceptionally loud fan which was fixed by a new design.

So is there actually a new fan available for the m5n or not? Is it just the z33 fan, or the s5 fan, or something else? Is there a particular part number for it that I could order, in the UK? Did the tech support person who sent you that message have any further details?
I have a very noisy and irritatingly whiny M5N. It's always been loud, but because worse and a few months ago, it became intolerable so I sent it back for repair, and the fan and heatsink were replaced; it was marginally quieter then for a couple of months, but in the past few weeks, it has got so noisy again that I can't stand it and am thinking of returning it yet again. So if I had a specific thing that I could ask them to do, it would help. It is the UK support that I had contact with and who did the repair before, and they were very unhelpful to deal with. I am not convinced that I could get them to replace it with a different model fan, but if I had really specific details of what was available, maybe I could. It is still under warranty, so I don't really want to play around with anything myself in case I invalidate that. I don't think the z33 is available here, and I can't see them replacing mine with an S5 fan if they're fixing it under warranty, even if I asked.
It is to the point where I am have considered trying to sell it and get something else, it is so noisy, but I don't see how I could in all conscience sell it without letting the buyer know why, and anyone wanting a very light 12" is bound to want to use it for travel/lectures etc, and it's far too loud to use in public places without causing serious disturbance to others. -

Again... no one should get all excited over this.... it's an S5 fan and after I confirmed it worked last year - Asus started suggesting the same fix.....
