I wonder if the notebook coolers do actually help on cooling the notebook significantly since I notice it mostly just blows air underneath it.

Should I get the USB port replicator when I purchase the W3j? Somehow I think is not 100% port replicator as other brands since these are third party. But I wonder if the third party also reduces the task of plugging power to the lappy?

    thanks,

firstly, the W3J is a cool machine. i don't think you would even need a laptop cooler unless you're planning on overclocking it. even when playing BF2, my W3J runs fairly cool. hot air does come out the vent on the right..but thats about it. the machine itself it very cool.

If the fans discharge into or nearby the intakes on your NB, then they seem to help by boosting air flow. The problem is many layouts do not match, air is blown where it is not needed. Must measure your NB, measure cooler, check fan discharge. I may make my own from parts shortly!
I would like an affordable 3 (or 4) fan model that also cools HDD area (+CPU & GPU), fans would need to be in a diagonal line, not a wide `V" that most are.
btw, My cooler now only blows 2 fans, 3rd rarely works (6 weeks old!)

I must start cooler, tap if fans not running, THEN set NB on top of it. If NB on top then started, NO way of knowing all fan working, unless lift /tilt up & peek!

Im really tempted to buy some small fans (60x60x15) from newegg for a few dollars and build my own. Then, I can have one suck air away from the hard drive and have a seperate fan push air directly to the CPU/GPU/RAM. I unfortunately won't be able to this for about another month.

i bought a laptop cooler just this past weekend. i got the simple, china-made variety. its got 3 fans, arranged in a V-shape, supposedly to cool the CPU, GPU & HD. its silent, but im not too sure how effective it is. my laptop runs a bit cooler after using it (ive yet to take temparature readings), but i think the fan doesnt spin fast enough to dissipate any heat from the bottom of the notebook. i wish there was a speed setting in it. it helps a lot when i place the notebook on top of the cooler when i need to put the notebook on top of my lap, though.

THere is actually a good review about said coolers on this website, a quick search will find it, was posted a few months ago.
I have coolers for my notebooks, and yes they do work, on average I would say that the machine is about 5C cooler with them when running off a/c.

I believe the W3J's exhaust vent is on the right side of the notebook. There are no coolers that would work with it.

My notebook cooler (an Evercool) definitely helps with the Inspiron 4000 I'm using now, especially when I'm having the antivirus software check the hard drive or when I've watching a DVD.

On the other hand, my sister just puts her Fujitsu Lifebook atop an upside-down wire mesh paper tray.
