are there any significant differences between purchasing an ensemble or having a reseller build you a notebook from barebones? also is it really easy to upgrade the hard drive and memory in asus notebooks as I'm thinking of purchasing a barebones system without the hard drive and memory then installing it myself?

Nowadays, many Asus ensemble and built on Asus models are easy to upgrade cpu, memory, and hard drive. All of them almost locate on the bottom, it doesn't like the previous or discontinued models such as that the cpu socket was not locate on the bottom, wireless adapter locate under the keyboard, and so on. Some examples for w3 series, the 2 memory slots locate under the keyboard and on the bottom. For latest version of it, Asus assign 1 stick 1GB memory to locate under the keyboard so that let the user be easy to upgrade another stick on the bottom.
If an user can pay more attention and be gentle for assembling the parts, nothing can not be handle it.
    Cheers

whats the difference between an ensemble and a barebone/whitebook? is it just that you have more options when you choose a barebone/whitebook?

Ensemble models' part are assigned by Asus whatever the brand, and speed. Manufacturers assemble the parts themselves, whereas, barebone models can be customized the cpu, memory and harddrive even the wireless adatper by an users, they have more flexible to choose what they need as long as all the parts can be compatible with it. This is the difference in brief.
