I have a 19" Proview PL926wbi external monitor connected to my Asus A8JP (which I just bought last week). However when I connect my external ac adaptor, I see these horizontal lines flickering and running up and down my external monitor (but not the laptop LCD). When the ac adaptor is disconnected and the laptop is running on batteries, these lines disappear. I have tried using a different monitor and the same thing happens. I have also tried different power outlets and the same flickering can be seen. any clues what can be happening?
I guess I could use the laptop w/o the ac adaptor connected to do away with the flickering, but that'll just drain the battery life
b/c I bought this laptop for gaming.

Are you using VGA or DVI? Sounds to me like some kind of electrical interference or ground issue. Regardless of VGA or DVI, you should defintely try a different cable.

Is either the notebook or LCD connected to the wall plug instead of a power surge bar?

both lcd and notebook are connected to power outlet w/o a surge bar.

VGA cable. But the monitor works fine with my desktop computer, so I highly doubt its the monitor or the VGA cable.

If you have a spare surge bar or power bar even around(or if able to borrow one for testing), try and see if that solves anything.

I do notice that if I go to AC power options in the taskbar and change the settings to "max battery", "portable/laptop", or "presentation" the flickering is reduced. But after looking at the screen for a 5-6 minutes my eyes start to hurt. It doesn't when those power options aren't turned on.

I tried a power bar with monitor and notebook, just noteook, and just monitor and the problem still persists.

    That doesn't matter, try a different/better cable.

I've got an A8JP and I've tried an external 19" Gateway VX920 CRT.

Tried it with AC adapter connected and it was fine.

However, I do ocassionally get a flickering problem(brightness) on my laptop's LCD and I think happens when my AC adapter is hot.

I have got the LCD replaced twice due to dead pixels and I'm not sure if that's the replacement is the cause. Since I only got to test my notebook for one day after purchase and never really got the chance to witness if this occurs with the original LCD that came with the laptop.

I don't think I can...the vga cable is attached to the monitor and can't be detached.

I had the same problem with my 20.1" Sceptre External monitor. Whenever the AC Adapter was plugged into my laptop the screen would constantly flicker. I tried everything from trying different outlets to moving the computer farther away. Then I decided to buy a DVI-DVI cable and now it is completely gone. So if anyone is having this problem, trying getting a DVI cable.

This is most likely a grounding problem. There is a thread some time ago discussing the exact same problem, and I think a solution was found. Search for "ground loop w3j" or something like that, you should find it.

Problem solved. I plugged my AC adapter into a 2-prong adapter then plugged it into a power strip and the flickering is gone. Muchos gracias.
