In the mysterious windows configsetroot directory on my vx2 i find many things that seem to have been left by asus.

I find confidential microsoft NDA documents in an SLP dir about activation and system lock preinstallation ...
I find winrar together with a keygen...
I find a crack directory with a serial number for a program i do not know...

I only found all this because my virus checker found a trojan in the winrar keygen...

    what's in yours?

I don't have that folder but I have a WinXP installation --- I have a 2006 ASUS computer (I suppose you have Vista).

Oh I deleted that "confidential microsoft NDA documents" as it only contained Bill Gates's rants about Clinton out to get him..."crack" dir ???

    Give me a break.

Where did you buy your notebook? I know that in Hong Kong or Taiwan, many resellers (for any brand of computer) can help you install many programs with cracks for free as long as you buy from them. But as far as the confidential NDA documents, I'd like to take a peek. Mind showing it to everyone?

I'm very serious. If you have vista look in windows\configsetroot\ there is a lot of stuff in there which shouldn't be there. I don't know how widespread it is, but a google search shows I'm not the only person to have found this (in german: http://www.asusforum.encke.net/module-pnForum-viewtopic-topic-4461.html) The NDA documents were in an SLP20 subdirectory and are about oem activation. There was also technical documents about Aero, an asus vista status ppt file, winrar, and a directory called "crack" amongst other things (I'm not at all suggesting it is a windows crack)

In the UK. No programmes were installed. It was factory sealed as far as I could possibly tell. One such document is attached. I also have a directory with a project in called asusbios which contains c code.

    EBE: I deleted the attachment.

Lol.... ok. now that i've seen it, i think you might want to delete the attachment from the thread since the document has explicit instructions on how to bypass OEM activation for Vista (i think its against the forum rules or something).

EDIT: I don't see that file on my W7S. I have Vista running on it too. Sounds like these isolated cases, but we'll need to see if other people are finding the same problem.

"explicit instructions on how to bypass OEM activation"

Looks like the opposite to me.
Maybe I'm missing something but it looks like simple info for OEM install. You'd need alot more info than that .doc to do anything out of the ordinary.

Granted I've no idea why it's on this persons p/c but that doc looks pretty harmless.

If anyone can enlighten me please do.

It tells what what you need to do, what programs you'll need and where you can get those programs from to by pass OEM activation.

Not to mention the first line is:

MICROSOFT CONFIDENTIAL - PROVIDED UNDER NDA

Which is much more damaging to this site than posting hacks/bypasses.

Did you read that link (german) you gave ? If you had had the reply(s) gave simple info to the question.

I think maybe some countries do things a little different than others. Maybe those files are for a restore type operation or the like ?

I just find it hard to believe a new shrink-wrapped notebook was purchased & had some kind of "secret MS info on it" (my words).

Please correct me if I'm wrong. It would not be the first time.

    At least I think it wouldn't ! :)

    Ok...right.

It was not a good idea to post that file. I'm sure it was left unintentionally there by ASUS; either when they built the recovery media and the default installation for the (UK version of) VX2; or maybe on that particular machine.

In any case, things like cracks, key generators, and especially NDA-protected documents (regardless of their origin) should not be discussed/posted on NBR. Therefore this thread is closed.
