anyone come up with a fix that works yet? messing with the realtek audio manager helps somewhat but not near enough. I know that most likely I will end up using headphones while watching dvd's but I would still like the option of using the built in speakers.
btw i'm using mediaplayer classic. will using other programs help at all?

CyberLink's PowerDVD5 and higher has an option in the audio settings to boost the audio on DVD movies which does help on notebooks. The 96 series audio is horriable we are installing powerDVD and then using the advance configuration options to boost the audio.
Open PowerDVD and go to the configuration settings, go to audio tab then click the advance button near the bottom of the window, select the misc. tab. Choose the option "For Noisy environments Especially recommended for Notebook Users" select that option and hit apply.
See if that helps.
Good Luck -
will try that even though I prefer to use media player classic

If it doesn't work uninstall it Asus seems to fall short in this area alot.

thanks that seems to help. should I also enable the low frequency effect? although it gives a warning that it could damage the speakers if they can't handle the low frequencies

I would not do that with those speakers they are so small that enhancing the bass (low freq) might blow them.

how much increase in dvd volume did you get using powerdvd5? Can powerdvd play other media types (avi,mp3,mpg) because I have low volumes on some of those file types also.
-
PowerDVD5 will pretty much play everything. AVI, MPG, MP3, DivX, WMV etc. You can load playlists into PowerDVD which can be a made up of any format.

with the noisy environment setting enabled on power dvd, the volume was fine (with everything maxed out), although I was in a somewhat quiet place. I don't have a volume problem on any other media format. speakers play like 4x as lound if its not a dvd, although the sound quality is not that great as it lacks bass. its certainly usable though. I would recommend using a pair of headphones as the HD sound out quality is amazing.

No problems with DVD volume on my Z96J. Three other laptops in my house play DVD's so quietly that you literally cannot hear what is going on in the movie. Definately not the case with my Z96J.
If any of you have a problem, use heaphones/earphone. Audio output is very loud though, so be warned. Make sure the volume is practically muted before plugging in headphones. If you want more than one person to watch the movie at one, get multiple sets of headphones, and some sort of audio splitter. I've got a nice device called a boostaroo that splits one audio connection into three, amplifies the signal significantly with less than .5% distortion, and it powers any headphones connected to it via two AA batteries. Allows multiple people to listen to the same mp3 player/dvd player/laptop at the same time, or extends battery life of the device. When your mp3 player doesn't have to power your earphones, you can listen as loud as you want, and your mp3 battery will last longer. Very nifty device if you ask me.
fix for dvd volume on z96j?
