I have a question about the direct messenger OLED screen on the G1. How can I get this to indicate new IM messages or incoming phone calls? It says this can be done but I can't seem to find any utilities on the system to do this.

Are you looking for the Asus Direct Console? This is what you need to use in order to control the lights and IM messages and more. You can find it in your programs, it hard to miss. Its called Direct Console, with a very simple interface.

directconsole only lets you set a user message or icon to be displayed on the screen. but asus's marketing docs say the screen can be used to notify you of IM messages or incoming calls. these are not set using directconsole, so there must be another utility. anyone know?

That's correct you will need chkmail which is another little program. In the Direct Console you should see 2 little Radio LED Buttons on the screen and just put light up both of them, one for the flashing lights on the side of the laptop and the other for the messenger service.

It sounds like IM notification only works for MSN.
