I noticed with my new G1, that using SPEEDFAN, it shows my harddrive going up to over 55c. is that normal for this laptop? I'm not defraging or anything this is in winxp.

Are you in a warm environment (I mean warmer than normal)? Where is your notebook placed (on a desk, on top of a notebook cooler, directly on your lap)? Have you cleaned the inside of your notebook? 55C may be a bit warm, unless you're doing something that's making your hard drive work hard.
-
55 degrees is a tad high, have you tried using NHC to check the temperatures?
Idling, my HD is around 35-40, when when in use like encoding or zipping large files, it jumps to 50-55. Note I'm using a 4200rpm HD for now(was using 5400rpm before it was 4-5 degrees hotter then above). -
55C is the limit for typical drives these days. make sure you're not blocking the airways so hot air can escape
-
Nope. Its that hot. NHC reports the same temp. The place where the laptop is one is a wood desk at my a/c office. Granted its warm here, about 25c(77f). But still..nothing crazy going on the harddrive. its idling around 51c, right now...
While not helping the Harddrive, I have speedfan set the fan to 100% speed to cool the processor. -
get a notebook cooler or maybe you should talk to Asus about the problem

The HD on my G1 often idles near 50C after being on for a while. Under load I've seen it in the mid 50s. Right now it's idling at 48C. For reference, CPU is idling at 52C and GPU is idling at 58C right now. Room temperature is around 22C.

thanks fizikz. At least it seems normal. I just need a notebook cooler I guess when i'm at the office.
Anybody know what the best one is? DOnt need something bulky tho. Hardly have room in my laptop bag. -
I personally use this one http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=373526
Was a little expensive but seems to fit the g1 well, cpu idling right now at 49c -
Notebook coolers are really only useful if your notebook has an intake vent on the bottom of the notebook (where air would be blowing from the cooler). If your notebook takes are in from the side or the top (I'm not sure about the G1), then the cooler will have minimal cooling effects...

the G1 chassis looks like its based of the old A6. Thats has heat problems and since i have it i know. My HD idles around 55C with cpu at 50-55C.

While I can it not helping much for the CPU side of things, the asus g1 had alot of holes cut out under it, so I think it would help in this case. The harddrive slot alone has opening on the top and the bottom of the cover

sorry don't mean to thread-jack, though at the same time don't wonna start another thread JUST for this question:
i'm using NHC to monitor the temp, though it's weird (well i personally find it weird anyways) that the temperatures jump quite quickly... i wonder how it monitors the temp? it seems to me that it's just a 'calculation' rather than an actual temperature detection? i'm thinking this because the temperature suddenly 'jumps' from around 50C to 60C within seconds when i'm say loading a program, and then sunddenly jumps back down to like 45C after the program has finished loading and i've been idling for like 20 secs... just seems unrealistic to me?
-
I can see the temp jump when doing something. That seems right. Small chip, high wattage. Will make the temp jump really fast. the cpu throttles to 1ghz, when running something it jumps it to 2ghz and stays if it stays at 100% usage the temp could climb fast. 50-60c in about 5-10secs? Easy if cpu usage is high

I just picked up the asus laptop cooler. Don't buy it. If you use it the way the direction says, the power chord from the cooler to the usb slot wont reach. If you turn around the cooler so the plug is on the same side as the cooler now the hot air blows on you
g1- how hot is too hot for the HD?
