I've been reading around a lot and I love the g1s, but the advantages of the Sager 2090 (or the Compal which is nearly the same) are really starting to grow on me, especially the battery life. Is it possible to underclock the GPU of the g1s to match the settings of the 2090, and achieve that same battery life? Granted the 2090 is 9 cell and the g1s is 8, but it should be somewhat closer, shouldn't it? Any help is appreciated

If you can overclock the GPu you can also underclock it. Just follow an overclock guide but instead of increasing speeds, decrease them :D

You can overclock a processing unit and you can underclock a processing unit, but can you ever just clock a processing unit? Yeah, I belted that SOB in the jaw just last week.

Yeah you can, whats more imporant than the clocks tho is the voltage being supplied to it. Not sure if you can change that.

If they have a stock underclocked card in a different machine, chances are they have less voltage going to it.

You can also undervolt your cpu some probably.

Dont forget to turn down your backlight on your screen if you can.

Any programs/guides that you would recommend for that? I've never messed with the whole OC/ underC thing before... thanks

Well the cpu is done in the bios, but I dont know if a notebook gives you the same options as a desktop. For the gpu you can controll its clock speed with programs like rivatuner, or atitool, I always just used coobits and did it thru the nvidia control panel.

Ok, I've heard those mentioned quite a bit so I guess that's a good start - is there any harm that can come from underclocking, as there is with OC? Obviously there will be no heat issues or anything like that, but, just to be on the safe side....

No underclocking wont hurt anything. Undervolting wont eather *but* its possible to go too low and it will become unstable and cause a system crash. At that point you have to reboot and depending on how you set the voltage if you cant get back to post and change it, may have to clear cmos.

Hmm... sounds like I'll have a bit of experimentation to do then if I go the g1s route.... Sager 2090 or Asus g1s? I keep bouncing... but I'm starting to lean towards the 2090

Doesn't Asus offer a utility to manage battery power? If its set to max the battery does that change the gpu clocking?

Actually the CPU is automatically clocked via multiplier using Intel Speedstep, even without any utility installed (if the OS and the ACPI drivers have no bugs, and the Laptop power scheme is selected in the Windows Power Settings). For undervolting the CPU, there is a guide on the Guides forum, you can use RMClock or NHC.
