once i have everything recovered, is it just effective to delete the bloatware manually?

For any notebook brand, I'm sure fresh install is more effective than uninstall the bloatware. Even after you uninstall, you still have to clean-up the registry, not to mention config files, and maybe a few other things.

but then where would i go from after it asks for the driver cd??

maybe someone else can help you with driver. Don't they have it on ASUS website?
g1s - want one partion, so bout to use recovery dvd/driver cd.
