i have seen alot of questions but not alot of answers in this forum with the quick search that i performed. here is what i did and this has worked for me:
slipstreamed wireless and chipset drivers into xp with nlite. when i first tried to install xp pro, it said "hard disk not found" so i knew i needed some drivers. only problem was that there is no floppy drive and no usb for a usp floppy even if i had one. so slipstreaming seemed to be my answer.. i used nlite

everything was easy except for the strorage driver. i had to download the floppy executable from the intel site in another computer, make the floppy, then copy those files over into nlite.

for the chipset i extracted the zip file and copied all the files form the "all" folder.

for the wireless, i copied over the whole driver folder

found the graphics drivers here: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=13253
used the drivers for the previous g1p for everything else.

right after i installed windows, i updated all my drivers using the cd that came with the computer by going through the device management. just keep your driver cd in the drive through the rest of this process
couple snags that took me a while to figure out: hdaudio and bluetooth
atk0100 needs to be installed first, then install wireless console. finally, install the bluetooth stack. after that it should all install itself, just make sure you have the bluetooth turned on with the console.
for audio, you need WDM_R167.zip
ftp://209.216.61.149/pc/audio/WDM_R167.zip
between this and my windows updates, everything seems to work. -
Thanks for the guide!, this should help a lot of people who own a G1s revert back to XP.

Lol, good work!
This is the exact reason why I went Vista X64 over xp64 for my G1s, I've burned a lot of coasters using nLite, for some reason I never could get it to work the way I wanted it to, wasted a lot of my time and CDR's. -
Thanks alot for the links
Did you get the drivers for the G1p you mentioned from the ASUS site? -
sorry i have been out of town, i am glad some people are finding this useful.
besides the links that i sent, i think i just let xp detect new hardware and searched everything from the cd. it has been from my sporadic experiences with asus drivers, the ones from the cds seem to work best. i have had a hell of a time trying to get atk stuff to work when downloaded from their site lol
as for nlite.. yeah i had a few coasters myself. i ended up just making one with the drivers that i needed slipstreamed and no other option just to make sure that it was as stock as possible -
Nice information. If I end up with the G1S, I'll definitely come back to this thread. Thanks for the post.

Hella thanks
People may find this helpful in extracting the floppy image:

Probably resurrecting a dead thread, but one question:
If I copy the SATA drivers onto a USB key and press F6 when first booting into windows XP installation, will allow the system to find the new drive?
I have a G1s with bios 205 - it seems that this includes pre-OS USB drivers.
On other systems I've built where installation cannot be successfully completed as SATA or RAID drivers were required, the hard drive was still dectected at the partitioning stage. -
I too have a question. I'm ordering the G1S-B2 tomorrow and was wondering if I should buy a copy of XP. Is Vista really that bad for gaming? I'm getting the laptop mainly for gaming/movies while I'm on trips for work. I plan to play games ranging from Diablo II to Crysis. Performance and compatibility are what's important to me. I don't care about DX10 either.

I still find it quite frustrating that ASUS hasn't released XP drivers for this laptop...but I'm fine with Vista until they do..if they do..hopefully.
So yeah, to answer your question...Vista on my G1S-B1 out of he box was absolutely dreadful...I don't understand why a company would even released a product so painfully bogged down...but after stripping it down, it's not bad at all. -
Right, I also suggest you give Vista a try.
Check my ASUS Vista optimization guide for tweaking it to work better and for removing bloatware.
If you absolutely hate it even after you tweaked it and removed the bloatware, get XP. But otherwise, save the money (your money with which you paid for the OEM Vista would be wasted if you change to XP). -
Thanks E.B.E. I read your optimitaztion guide a few days ago and was going to use it and some other tweaks in addition to removing the bloatware. I'm not too worried about how newer games will play, just older ones such as Diablo II, Deus Ex, Sim City 4, Fallout 1 & 2, etc.
LARM, Great to hear that COD4 and Bioshock run great. I have been putting off buying COD4 but will get it eventually. I baught Bioshock on release day and was pissed that I couldn't run it on my X850 Pro AGP card due to it having Shader Model 2 and not 3. I know there are user fixes but they have 10 min load times and I want to experiance the game in all it's glory.
g1s and xp
