The temperature that you are measuring is the Video card and yes that is normal for the G1s if you search through the forum you will find that some people have overclocked the video card to 100C if not more so don't worry.

Btw my computer (G1S) runs at 80C when gaming

So, what is a good earmark for a safe maximum temperature? My G1s is arriving in a couple of days and I'm considering OCing the GPU, but I don't want to destroy my brand new computer.

This is what I got from the Asus Tech:
    "Hello,

One quick question: I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate x64 and the laptop GPU is idling at 75C.
Under games such as Counter Strike: Source and Command and Conquer 3, it goes to 101C during a
summer day (at which the temperature is roughly 75-85C). I was just wondering if it was okay for the
laptop or if I need to do something about it. I got the temperatures from RivaTuner 2.02 and I'm not
    overclocking anything.
If I run the laptop with my Zalman NC1000 notebook cooler, the GPU temperature stays around 86C
during gaming. I do want to know if it is safe to play on the computer without a notebook cooler,
    though!

    Thanks."

    Response:

    Hi,

Using the Riva Tuner to test the temp indicates that you are measuring the core of the GPU...it will get that hot and maybe even get hotter.

ANyhow, rule of thum...is if the unit doesn't shut down on you or freezes...then it should be okay.

I would of course recommend you to get a usb external notebook cooler just to cool it down.

please also you can use NB probe...this is Asus temp measure...it will state if it's normal or not...you can find it in the Asus Utility in the program files...

    thks
    peter!

High temperatures are normal for the G1S (as others have said). Other laptops too get these temperatures.

I find under load the gpu is 70-90C depending on whether you overclock or not. The CPU usually doesn't go higher then 65C, mine are almost always 60-61C.

The HDD also gets pretty hot, around 50-55C.

Here are the programs I use to monitor temperatures:
CPU - Use CPU-Z, free program and gives you a lot of information
GPU - nTune, get it from nVidia's website
HDD - HD Tune, also free and a great program.
