So I was going to buy the X1 at Best Buy after knowing the fact that its $950... after speaking with them... it turns out that there is a new g50vt-x5 in stock for $999!! I took the plunge and bought it. Only changes are P7450s instead of a P8400, supposed to have DDR3 for the 9800 GS graphics card, a 320gb 7200rpm hard drive and white LED instead of blue ones.

Not sure if its worth the $50 dollars for a downgraded CPU... was hoping that they might accidentally give the X5 from newegg or some kind of error like the last Gateway deal at Best Buy... time to install Windows 7 on it!

Resolution is still the same: 1366 X 768. How do you tell if its a 15.4 or 15.6 inch screen? Don't have my old 15.4 right next to me to compare at the moment.

I thought the back lights would be white not blue but I see its the actual lights on the notebook... Looks odd. I guess its just because its diffrent.

I dont think its worth the extra money unless you just want to be diffrent.

I wouldn't worry about the CPU. You only get 1 year warranty (unless you paid to extend) and you can get them CHEAP on eBay and get great speeds... They are very simple to change. Just it will void a warranty.

The light is actually white but its hard to capture the whiteness since there is a hint of blue in it. Looking at the second picture, you can see on the keyboard that the led are white except the scroll message thing. That one is blue.

The funniest thing about this whole buying experience was that no one at the store knows how this X5 looked. I though it might be all black and orange like the ones from normal resellers. And they won't open the box nor would they tell me when they will have it on display!! =(. It's not supposed to be in their systems yet.

Oh yeah, near the top of the keyboard, the color starts to blend from black to some copper brownish color.

Windows Vista shows a score of 5.0 for the processor and the rest are either 5.8 or 5.9.

No, the P7450 is a 2.13ghz processor with 3mb cache. The p8400 is a 2.26. So you lose about 130mhz.

Is there a big difference between the 2.13 and 2.26? Is it noticeable to the naked eyes?

That is hot. Agree on the backlit key board. Maybe we should get the new prototype Asus Keeboard so we can have a computer in our computer. That computer would be even better with different specs, cuz i still like my A1 better.

/*edit. Plz also let me know how win7 goes on it. I dual booted my A1 with win7 but I could not get Direct Control to work or my cd drive. With out my cd crive I couldn;t install cod5 so I kinda went back to vista.

I couldn't get Direct Console to start on Windows 7 so I decided to go back to Vista. However, the optical drive works great. I'll post up some better pictures after I exchange this puppy... I've got a whole row of dead pixels!!!

By quality, do you mean the resolution? If so, they're different from the ones on newegg.

The newer model is the one with the downgraded cpu. Does the x1 have a 7200rpm hard drive? While I was at the store... their inventory list showed the x1 having a 5400rpm whereas the x5 had a 7200.

I didn't realize it has a larger battery... i may need to pick one of these up for myself. I LOVE my X1, but the battery life is pretty pathetic. I am a college student and can't get through any of my classes without a plug next to me. Can someone who has the X5 comment on battery life??

Can you give us more precisions about this X5?

I was about to buy the X1 but 'd like to know what's really new in dat baby... because you said ''it seems like there is DDR3''....

Can you tell us now if it's really DDR3 ?

The 9-cell battery is sweet, but the downgraded CPU seems like a pointless change and the new design is really ugly. Seems like an overall downgrade from the X1 to me.

I do want to pick up a 9-cell battery though. I use my laptop in lectures sometimes and I can be screwed if I don't have an outlet nearby in a 4-hour class.

God. When the G50vt-x1 was 999, I was feeling like crap for buying an N50 for 960... This just KILLS me. I wonder how much a slightly used 2 month old asus N50 goes for...

I really should have waited until christmas like my dad told me to....

I was told that this model isn't up on the website yet or not until they're done with the X1.

As for the design, I guess it depends on the user. I think it looks cooler than the blue one but maybe I like red/orange myself... hehe.

The battery is 7200mah and I can take a picture of it if anyone wants to see it. The memory is still DDR2 but the rep told me this new one has DDR3 for the video card? Sometimes I feel that their book contradicts themself... since the X1 is supposed to have a 5400rpm and DD2 videocard.

Maybe the $999 price is the new MSRP for this machine instead of the original $1250 with all its downgraded/upgraded components.

I've ran GTA IV and it ran smoothy! The P7450 isn't the bottleneck at all.
