so i was debating if i should switch my setup to raid rather than enhanced, but i wanted to know if anyone has gotten performance gains with raid, or if it is marginal then stay with enhanced.

yes i know the benefits and cons already but i wanted to hear from other g51 owners their experiences, like:

Did you go raid? which raid? 0? 1?did you switch back? did you have problems? did an o-ring fall out your vent? you know stuff like that.
and if you suggest i should just do it.

    Thanks guys

I have two separate 320GB hard drives, and I like the setup so far. I've never done RAID, though, so I can't compare.

I used RAID0 when I had my G50 notebook. RAID0 will provide a slight performance boost when opening applications. It may or may not be noticeable to the average user, but if you're a performance freak like me, then it might be something you'd be interested in. Keep in mind that if one hard drive fails, you'd loose all your data on both drives.

RAID1 was kind of pointless to me since I typically make my own regular backups with my external HDD

I'm going with RAID1, since this is mobile unit, sudden movements(drops can kill a drive) with two your chances are better. Sure you can make backups all day long, but who has time for that. Reinstalling an O/S and applications is a pain the first time.

I'll post some HDTune stats with RAID1 and Windows7.

I'm using RAID0 on two 500GB HDs. There's been a slight improvement from before, but nothing truly noteable. I haven't had the chance to move anything large onto this computer though, so I imagine that the results shall be more noticeable. In retrospect, I wish I had thought to do benchmarks before and after setting up RAID for the types of tasks I'll be doing.

For backups, I'll usually setup my computer to synchronize to an external hard drive while sleeping.

If you are using two HDD

Enhanced is like JBOD mode, no performance gain - data loss is isolated to the failing HDD.

RAID0 - Performance gain by 10-15% depends on usage - data loss is spread across both drives if Array fails and a rebuild is required. Available disk space is sum of both drives.

RAID1 - Similar performance as Enhanced, with data redundancy on the secondary drive. Very helpful if you have mission critical data you can't afford to lose. Disk space is not added together, but appears diminished due to the secondary drive is used as mirror of primary. Also requires a rebuild in the event of failed array.

The main concern is your primary use and type of data you will storing.

If you will using this as a desktop replacement ( very little mobility, and gaming ) - RAID0.

If used for work and a lot of traveling - RAID1

If used for both and 10%-15% performance isn't a main concern stay with Enhanced mode.

    Hope this information helps.

I like Raid. It keeps those goddamn ants away from my hard drive.
