The temperatures in the g51 are starting to get out of control. In games like L4D2, gpu peaks at around 90C but in modern warfare 2, its been peaking at 102C and floating around 95C. Ive been using CPUID to get temperature readings. The computer is stable and have had no problems with it. Sometimes when I alt-tab out to check the temp, it reads something like 96C but will instantly drop 8C or so.

I know from reading many threads here that this laptop runs hot, but I'm starting to get paranoid. Should I redo thermal paste / undervolt the GPU or anything else? Any advice will be appreciated.

I stabilize around 80C after the fan kicks on at 87C in all games (MW2, Dragon Age etc).... so there are things you can do.

102c is too hot, probably not hot enough to dmg it, those things are rated to run that hot without ill effects but to get it cooler you can do a few things.

1.) Easiest and most foo proof is to get a cooling pad or even just try to lift up the laptop some with something so it gets more airspace underneath.

2.) Moderate difficulty is to replace the stock TIM with something that is better like AS5 or ICD7, this may or may not help a whole lot depending on how well the stock TIM stuff was applied, in my last few times in doing this it did not have large effect as the stock stuff was done well and this benifit workks much better when combined with #1

3.) Advanced, see my C90S mod :D drilled my own holes for more air ventilation, increased cooling greatly.

If all else fails you may consider you have a defective unit and RMA it and see if you get one back that runs better. Also keep in mind your environment. If somebody in a 70c office has there card running 90c and your in a 90c desert and at 102c chances are your unit may be running better than his, just your in a much worse environment for cooling.

Another thing that came to my attention is that occasionally the GPU temp will rise to 90C while I'm just sitting in the desktop watching CPUID. Then the fan will go full power until around 70C and at that point it will either float down in the 60's or fly back up to 90C then down again.

The ambient temp in this basement is around the low 70'sF.

Is there a way to make it so the heatsink fan kicks in sooner than 90C?

I am really tempted to try unervolting the GPU at this point.

what drivers are you using? I've noticed that the 195.55 drivers are running hawt. I hit 98 playing Mass Effect the other day, and I freaked out. It's freezing in my dorm room (60F) and I'm rolling w/ a Cooling Pad too.

I haven't run ME w/ the 186.82 drivers, but i remember not going past 93ish, and it stables around 85ish with teh 186.82 drivers.

    Let me know!
