I know you're all probably fairly tired of hearing this junk, but I'm so overwhelmed with information from the various G1 threads that I've ceased to function correctly in the ol' noggin.

I'm currently weighing my options between a G1 and a Compal HEL80 and finally got around to reading about the G1 tonight (soon to be morning). I'm beyond blown away by the G1 community, the machine itself and the seemingly endless outpouring of positive feedback about the machine and have seriously begun to question my previous settling on the Compal.

    Main questions:

Where to buy? I live in the USA on the East Coast and while all the big retailers have it I've also heard MilestonePC thrown about a lot and I liked the somewhat larger degree of customization they offered.

Options? I know I'll go with the 100GB 7200 RPM HD but I'm not sure about the CPU. My gut reaction is to go for the highest end and spend the money on the T7600 but I'd like to know what you all have and how you feel about the decision before I make a final decision.

I think all my heat-related questions have been answered by browsing this forum and I'll be happy as long as it doesn't melt itself or choke too much (I have a long history of choke problems with my HP).

I probably won't wait the three months or whatever for DirectX to possibly come out unless I can be convinced.

I really don't have anything else except I feel excited about spending an obscene amount of money on a new laptop after seeing this machine just not yet willing to dive in head first.

EDIT: Oh yeah, the warranty option sounds great at Milestone. How is the quality of their service if I decide to go that route?

Heat should be fine, you can always get a notebook cooler. Milestonepc and other resellers here who post on the forums provide awesome service. If you want the 100gb 7200rpm, milestonepc, and btotech (NY-east cost).

Resellers, there's BTOTech.com based in New York City, PROPortable (edited cuz Justin corrected me :D) in Pennsylvania, and MilestonePC.com in California and Canada. All of them ship anywhere in the US, so its just your own preference. They're all great resellers that post in the forums, very helpful people!

The 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo processor is already very powerful. Most tasks won't even use the most out of those 2.0 GHz dual core processors. I don't think you'll need to specifically upgrade to T7600 unless you really have the money and don't mind spending it :D.

Heat should be fine. I haven't heard complaints on heat issues on the G1.

Well, if you DO wait a few more months, there's a bunch of major announcements, like the release of Centrino Pro (Santa Rosa), Windows Vista pre-installed and DirectX10.

The Asus G1 is awesome. Its a worthy investment!

    Two very important things:

    1. We're in Pennsylvania - Scranton to be semi exact... or NEPA. We also have a place in Arlington, Virginia... or NOVA as they call it.. (and it just goes so well with NEPA)
    2. In terms of "upgrades", to keep your very valuable Asus global warranty, you need to have a stock unit..... not bad when say you just add a stick of ram, you just need to take that out. For a hard drive, you need to keep the original... technically the same on the cpu. As for the cpu though, the difference between what something like the G1 comes with and the T7600 - not worth the difference in price for the added performance which most people won't even see years down the road - obviously not worth buying two cpus.. that's dumb.

By making a simple upgrade to say a 7200rpm hard drive, you're looking at a cost of about $150, while keeping the stock drive (that can be used for backup or as extra storage in an external case, etc)..... but you keep Asus' warrranty which is a value say between $350-400...... and doing it that way you can also buy the extended 3rd year global warranty without any issue as well.

At this point you'll probably have to wait a month or so anyway, as basically all current G1's are sold out everyone and the next shipment should be of vista models in 4-5 weeks or less.... As Sam said, you could always wait until late spring... my guess on a Santa Rosa G1 update is late April/ early May.

... by the way, I could tell how overwhelmed you were just by how you named your thread... I knew what I was getting into before I clicked on... very good on your part - I wish more people could express their subject in such a concise manner.

If you're anywhere between the general radius from us - NYC, Philly, State College, and Syracuse - I could perhaps help you with a little more hands on when it comes to these models if you wanted.
