    from ewiz.com for $1350 +$18 shipping
    incredible price, incredible laptop
    the speakers are terrible.
unfortunately, even when you plug in headphones, they're really low volume.
build quality is great. keyboard is great (other than Fn and CTRL being swapped  )
trackpad looks cool, but buttons are really stiff. i don't like it too much. luckily i always use a usb mouse.
screen seems good, but there is light leakage coming from the bottom.
    is this normal guys ??
viewing angle isn't great, but it's not terrible.
camera is low res. but still kinda cool.
software for it is good too.
    my 3dmark05 is around 3900
    my 3dmark06 is around 2100

all i need is to upgrade RAM and put in a merom and it'll be incredible and last for years

Make sure the system volume is at max. Go to Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices. Make sure the volume slider is up then click near the bottom where it says "speaker volume" and take the slider to max.

    See if that helps.

hm. for my a8jm it gets too loud if i have everything maxed.
Make sure your settings are right (w/e that means) cuz for me the speakers are more than loud.
I do agree that for certain sound or movie files with low volume it gets hard to hear, but otherwise it seems quite powerful.
Even with your headphones the volume is low? hm. not a problem for me either.

Yep... quite loud if everything maxed .. make sure you have Audio control maxed out, and also the hardware based volume adjustment to max (Fn + F12)...

Light leakage at the bottom seen at certain angles, at normal angles I don't see too much leakage...

I have the same problem with my V6V.... the volume on the headphones is not loud enough...

Might buy an external audio card...

Volume is fine on mine, it just lacks bass. I have some light leakage from the bottom of the screen.

Can you adjust the volume via BIOS for some more sound? I know for the W3j you can, but it does not seem to make much of a difference. Perhaps for other notebooks it does make a difference.

Hmmm... maybe your ear's tolerance for volume is much higher than mine :)

But yeah... updated drivers maybe? I know there are some Audio drivers on the ASUS website that are newer than the ones that came with the A8Jm Driver CD... try that too and see what happens...

hmm...the volume on my A8JM is loud as hell...I even put it on the 2nd to lowest notch and was still able to hear music pretty loud.

just finished getting linux working (ubuntu)
w/o too much effort i have wireless and nvidia drivers working
sound seems a bit better, but it's certainly not loud.
much less than my bro's dell 14" (e1405)
still, i can live with it

    nope.
had to manually do the dpkg xserver to get 1280*800 working, but now everthing is fine, except the camera, which i haven't tried to fix cause i don't care.
