I am getting this warning in my event viewer...
An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\D during a paging operation.
any idea what is wrong? My d drive is a partition of my c, so understandably I am a bit worried.
-
Run chkdsk and scan for bad sectors.
-
is there an option to scan for bad sectors? cause the chkdisk came up clean just last night
-
so I used some diagnostic software from an Ultimate boot usb, it found 3 bad sectors...
-
usu. the hd scan from the actual companies are more sensitive to bad sectors.
i would back up your hd if you haven't and see if you can at least send your hd back for warranty through the hd company if you're out of warranty with asus -
is there really a point? wouldnt it be cheaper to buy a new one? are they even repairable?
correct me if I am wrong, but I thought my w3j had a 2 year global warrenty when I bought it, but when I contacted asus support about something they said the 1 year warrenty was up. just curious if anyone knows the answer to that. -
and to add I came accross this thread
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=60498
my temps get up to 49+ if I remember correctly, right now I have it propped up to get better air flow, but haveing hit these higher temps has it permenantly damaged my hard drive?
also, I was looking at hard drive, and from what I understand my W3J has an IDE controller, is that the same as PATA? -
Uuh there is a lot of confusion on this thread.
Let me try to sort it out:
CHKDSK scans for bad sectors with the option /r . So, run:
CHKDSK C:/F/X/R
CHKDSK D:/F/X/R and so on on all partitions.
For the HDD manufacturer's scan utility, see the HDD manuf's website.
If you send the HDD for warranty noone's going to try repairing it, they'll replace it.
In the US by the time W3Js were sold I think they had a 1year default warranty only. in Europe and other parts they had 2 years.
If the CPU temperature is 49+ that's sort of normal for a laptop. You need to look at the HDD temperature. If that is 49 that's on the high side but still not a killer (can be a killer in the long term). Did you ever clean up your notebook of dust? If you didn't you should.
And finally, PATA = IDE = EIDE (in a first approximation). -
ok thanks for the info....
as for an update the hard drive can go for a while and nothing happen, then it will get a chain of error 51: "An error was detected on device Device\Harddisk1\D during a paging operation" spread about 15 min apart judging by the event viewer, also an error 57 on the ftdisk: The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur. also these errors are all warnings in the log, I have had only one "disk read error" that actually affect the operation of my computer when the drive was really full due to torrents and windows ran out of room to write data and then the error ensued.
anyway I am going to order a new hard drive, I dont want to deal with this failing on me an an inopertune time.
I have opened up the comp and cleaned it out a few times, I keep it in rather open clean spaces and have never really had any build up.
also, yes the hard dirve is at 49 some times 50 (during all the chk disks I have been doing)
so any recommendations for a new hard drive? solid state (as much as I wish) is out of the question, so whats the best brand/model out their I can get. Size isnt really an issue, I will likely look for some thing around the 100 gig mark again. Should I stay away from 7200 rpm drives b/c of heat?
and before I go for a new hard drive, is it possible that this is a different thing causing this? I dont want to buy another one just to realize that it wasnt the hard drive. Is there a possibilty that I could just ignore these errors and hope for the best?
anyway, any advice would be appreciated. -
unfortunately, the best performing hds are all sata. hitachi is usually on top performance wise, but seagate comes with a 5 year warranty and is close behind on peformance. 7200 rpm hds really don't increase heat output that much.
after you replace your hd, you can probably send in your old one to the hd manufacturer for a replacement and sell it on ebay or something. -
fujitsu would take my drive back and give me another one? do oem parts have warrenty?
-
Yes, OEM parts do have warranty. WD, Fujitsu, Hitachi all have 3 years standard warranty, and Seagate with 5 Year. Which is longer than Asus manufacturer's warranty. If in fact the drive is done, you should check the manufacturer of the hard drive and get a warranty status via their website on the drive. More than likely the warranty might be still valid!
-
oh good, I am working on that now... as for the use of my laptop during the turnover time, I think I will make a linux live usb
-
I had a similar problem with my W3J a few months ago .. I RMA'ed it and had the faulty Fujitsu HDD replaced with a Seagate 5400rpm. Works like a charm now
-
problem for is I have had it for a year and 3/4, and the warrenty I am told was up after a year... I thought I had a 2 year warrenty, oh well
-
The hard drive may have a separate warranty from manufacturer and not ASUS. You will have to disassemble the notebook to take out the hard drive and check the label for the manufacturer, serial number, and model number.
-
well Fujitsu got back to be and its a no go, so I am going to order one I guess..
so I just went to my university book store and got a samsung 160 gig, for 99.95 CAN... is this a good deal/ good drive?
hard dirve failing?
