so i bought this ASus from a NBR poster, very well packed & shipped quickly so well done there!.

Initial problem is : it wont power on. i assumed when the seller said it wont boot, it would power on but not post, my bad for not asking. so my road is longer now....at first inspection this is a good looking unit, i tested the 9800gs in another machine as well as the ram it all worked fine. the screen works in another machine as well, and has no dead pixels that i can see.

when i plug in the AC adapter, it makes a faint beep, and the light blinks on & off. this leads me to believe that its shorted somewhere...am i correct in my assumption? does this thing have to have a bettery installed in it to power on like the older M9700's?..... i also pulled the bios battery and re-soldered a new battery to the wires and still the same issue. no lights, no loud audible beeps no action,......any advice from here?

    thanks

First off: Wow. You're one of the more daring people on these forums in my book at least. Testing the GPU/screen? That's a pair of meticulous processes right there. Soldering CMOS batteries? Interesting. Anyways:

I would consider a bad motherboard. If it doesn't POST at all, your only option might be to try a blind flash.

    Also, when you say:
You're speaking of the adapter itself here, right? That sounds like a short of some kind to me. With something delivering that much power there should be heat somewhere from a true short, unfortunately when you find it it'll likely be dead. I would check the motherboard to see if there's any obvious heat anywhere.

Other than that, I don't know. If all the components check out fine, it sounds like the motherboard is shot. The CMOS battery wouldn't do much other than throw a clock time error, but you probably need it in there.

I'm no expert, these are my 2c though.
    Best of luck.

by testing the components i meant, that i installed them in a already working machine, to verify tat they worked i benched it with 3dmark 06 to verify it wouldn't crumble under a load. the same applies to the screen ( i used the same unit). as far as soldering the Cmos battery its pretty easy you just take the plastic off it and remove the two wires from the cr2032 battery, and then solder them onto a new one. i did that just to know that i was using a new battery in case the old one was shorted.

as for the beep it sounds like its coming from the motherboard itself, but the light on the AC adapter is blinking. the ac adapter works fine with 3 other computers.

im thinking it could just be a faulty Dc jack, but i was hoping a more experienced person might have some insight.

i tried a different ac adapter, t still made the beep, its very very faint though. is there anywhere on the board i cant test that is further in the circuit to see if there is power going through the dc jack?
