    For upgrading CPU:

You will need.....lint-free microcloth, thermal material remover, small-medium Philips head screwdriver, and new thermal paste such as THIS.

    G50 disassemble guide HERE

Once you remove the heat sink, clean off the remaining thermal material on the heat sink with the thermal material remover and microcloth.

Replace the CPU with your new one and carefully add the new thermal paste.
Instructions for applying Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste

Put your heat sink back in place and lock it down.

Budget: ~$20 (not including the CPU). T9900 can be purchased for $425 on ebay.
Time: 15-30min depending on skill level

Please take note that upgrading/replacing your CPU will void your manufacture warranty.

    For upgrading ram:

Any DDR2 200 pin SoDimm would work. The G50 can support up to 8GB (2 x 4GB) of ram, but you'll need a 64bit OS in order for your system to fully utilize more than 3GB. I believe the G50Vt-X5 already comes with a 64bit OS, so you should be good in that department.

Since the G50Vt-X5 already comes with 4GB, 800MHz DDR2 ram, you have 2 options to upgrade; upgrade to 6GB or 8GB

    Any of these will work

Budget: 6GB - $150-$200 depending on speed. Just purchase 1x4GB
8GB - $300-$400 depending on speed. Will need to purchase 2x4GB
    Time: <5min

Upgrading your ram will NOT void manufacture warranty.

Dude in 2-3 years you get a new lappy and this is it!

a much much better one than your curent g50 WITH the upgraded T9900 would cost about 800$ in three years...

You don't need T9900 to last you the next 2-3 years. Just overclock the CPU you have now to 2.5GHZ+ and you will be fine.

4GB of ram is more than enough for general use unless you are doing extreme video/image editing then you will need more.

Well for the brave there is also the 32bit 4GB (google 4GB-7600.RTM.x86.04.08.2009.exe) patch that will extend the 32bit limitation to 36bits (A feature found on most windows server versions) to give you a max use of 128GB of memory. Since in most cases Windows apps are 32bit you wont really use more than 2GB per app anyway (I am not 100 percent on this point). At any rate the patch works well and I get 8GB of memory use on my G50VT.

I was thinking of popping in a Q9900 for my system. Mostly for the VT support since I do a little bit of virtualization with my laptop and wanted the VT support.

Memory is already at 8GB so I am happy there. Win7 32bit is using it all when I need it. Its been nice. I noticed a few performance snags with 32bit apps on Win7 64bit (In other Win x64bit oses in general) So I opted for this method with the patch.
