The V6j has a 7400.
Besides that, I think thats about it -
cant believe ati has gotten all over the laptop scene.
so basically just 3 choices for nvidia from asus? Z71V, A6Vc and V6j?

Well, there's always the z81sp and its 6800, but it's a really massive machine. But yeah, that's about as good as you'll get with Nvidia and Asus.
I'd steer away from the z71v, personally. Its 6600 is underclocked to 250MHz, and it still has a few heat issues here and there. There are a lot of other brands with full-speed 6600s or 7400s, just not Asus, unfortunately. -
im finding the z71v to be really feature filled.
the 6600 even underclocked will be fine in linux.
not going to be gaming much but would like to have the ability to crank up something at a lan.
anyone else have issues with the z71v?

it was pretty popular, infact very popular when it came out.. everyone called it the "next CL56".. that was until Asus revealed the Z70v then Z70va. -
The Z71v still packs a lot of punch for the pricetag though. -
The Z71v had a fairly widespread battery problem a few months after it came out. Batteries would no longer charge to max and eventually became useless. The problem was in the first batch of batteries sent out. Batteries manufactured in 2006 should no longer have this problem, but its up to the reseller to make sure you have a good battery. Theres a huge thread floating around somewhere.

I would get teh Z70V if it was offered with geforce go6600, however i havent seen it anywehere..

other Asus models with Nvidia are the A6vc, V6J, A8 (with 7600 option), w7j (7400?), but not too sure if any fo the newer models will come with it. A6 and V6J are the only ones you can get now with it (in the US).
but other wise, as far as available whitebooks with the Go6600.. you're limited to the Asus Z71v, Uniwill 259EN3, Quanta KN1 PM, Quanta MW1, and MSI 1032. -
low end nvidia cards outperform mid-high level ati cards in linux all due to ati's ****ty linux drivers..
im not specifically looking for the go6600 but it seems to be cheaper to get a laptop with it since they are larger...and thus cheaper

djpharoah I say go for it and go purchase one.
All the problems reported were reportedly fixed, except one, which isn't really a problem, but just the way it is.
I'm talking about the screen. People complained about a sparkle effect on the screen like a lot of Dells. Thing is many people also reviewed this laptop and said it wasn't as bad as people had stated before. So it's a matter of opinion I guess. This sparkling does happen on a lot of screens so I don't see what the big deal is. Even on some CRTs and LCDs and even my Z70Va's screen although it is less pronounced and you can only see sparkling if you put your face up to the screen.
I was going to get that laptop as well because of its videocard, I prefer Nvidia over Ati, but the overall looks and weight of it turned me off.
I'm also kind of glad that I got the Z70Va over the Z71V because I found out I don't enjoy playing games on my laptop as much as I do my desktop so the Ati x700 is a much better option for video playback, which is what I prefer to do on my laptop over my desktop's Nvidia 6800.
You should go for it since it has better support for Linux over Ati.
This laptop is great and you can find it for a really great price lately.
BUY IT~!
Cheers,

I think Im going to end up with the Z71V since it has the option of a modular battery which is awesome! I currently have an IBM T20 so getting the Z71V would be like a totally new world..
However i hope that the Z71V is still being sold when i plan to purchase it this august. Mike can you explain the problem that you said wasnt really a problem?
Also what is LCD sparkling effect? Im kinda confused about it.
thanks

Actually, if its this August, I'm not sure if the Z71v will be around.
I know the M6 chassis is EoL, but is the M7? -
Someone had to mention the sparkle. Dont even ask what it is if you dont know what it is you wont even notice it. its like those things that arent even problems till someone mentions it then you like oh i never noticed but now you cant get it out of your mind. Sparkle is not a problem its just a aspect of certain LCDS but it really isnt even an issue at all.
-
Coriolis, i hope its still available in august..if not i might have to purchase it earlier.
Also does the Z71V have an MXM slot? or is the geforce go6600 in there an asus proprietary module?

The ASUS Z81sp is the best notebook (I own this big toy) that you will be able to find a very good nvidia card which is the 6800 go (256-bit) which blows away the x700. The Z71V with the 6600 is next best system with an nvidia card in it and it pretty much ties in preformance as the x700.
The V6j has a 7400 and the Z92km has a 7300 in it but if you like to play the latest FPS games, these cards will only allow you to play them at low to med settings since this is a 64-bit card compaired to the 6600 which is a 128-bit card.
I was in the same postion as you were in finding an nvidia ASUS notebook before I settled on the Z81sp. It was a hard choice to make between the Z81sp, z70va and the Sager NP-5320 and after 2 months of having my notebook, I could not have been happier. -

well i wil lhave to see ...only time can tell. If the new model comes with 7600 and dual core, then i dont think i will be able to afford it
