    helloz,

anyone know how to hotswap for asus notebooks? Currently want to switch between DVD+/-RW and 2ndary battery.

I know models from other companies sometimes have microsoft's "remove optical drive safely" as you would an usb drive, though thats not the case... hmm~

oh btw, when you take out the optical drive system freezes until you pop it back in. expected behavior.

    Depends which model...

    Let me try..

edit: Just pulled my DVD+- Drive out....everythings working fine...

    Oh, it just froze up...

Once I put it back in, it works fine...

So based on that, I'm pretty sure swapping out the OD with a Modular battery is fine..

My optical drive shows up under the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the system tray. Removing the drive via this method leaves the rest of the W3 running fine. The drive is detected when reinserted.

On my Z70VA, I pop out my DVD drive and insert my 2nd HD, it wont recognize it (and vice versa). I have to reboot in order for it to be recognized and appear in My Computer. But it does not lock up.

Guys the point is when is the last time that you saw an ide hot swap device? Yes its suposed to work but its not an exact science. Pulling it out twice then reseating it may work, logging out then logging in may work, rescanning device manager may.....Its not hot swappable no matter what asus says. USB is "hott swappable" but ide devices?? .......I dunno i just say restart it if you want to put in a hd or od.

I have no problem with my w3v either hot swapping between the 2nd battery, the dvd drive and a second hard drive as long as I do the Safely Remove Hardwaren thing before removing the drives. Wonder if this is dependant on the model.

    cheers.
