i can only seem to open the two hatches on the bottom. How do I take it apart to get to the fan and heatsink? is it safe to do so? i think i continue prying it apart but it seems to be connected to the hinge.

You can unscrew all the screws at the bottom, and the bottom cover should come off easily with a bit of wiggle. Never try too hard to pry open the cover, as the plastic is not that difficult to break.

It is quite safe to open your laptop, but do bear in mind that by doing so will void your warranty. If you just need to clean the dust, you only need to use a can of compress air and spray it directly into the vent. The dust should come off from the bottom. You don't need to open your entire laptop to clean the dust, unless you are doing once a year deep cleaning.
