I recently bought a W3J and it comes with 2x512mb ram so I bought 2x1024mb ram for it. I replace already the one that is located at the bottom of the laptop but I can not locate the second 512mb ram to replace it also so I can have the maximum ram available for my laptop. I do hope that someone will know and guide me to find it.![]()
Just to let people know that possibly thinking of buying one Asus W3J.......is a great machine. The only I wish it was having its the Sony X black technology and it will have been the perfect machine.![]()

That's too bad that the version you got has 2x512... the US model is coming with 1x1024..... but there is a slot under the system which is accessible via two screws in a little rectangular access panel and the other is under the keyboard which is easy to get to as well.
-
the one at the bottom of the laptop had to take around 12 screws in order to access it and replace it with a 1024 ram stick... do you know how to access the one under the keyboard?
thanks again for the fast reply....very appreciated -
enjoy your machine.. -
I bought the mahine in Uk from Tottenham court road in London. As far as I know and search on the net in UK it comes with 2x512mb ram stick inside. I used to work for 2 years for sony centre in London and I used to own a Sony A series laptop with X black technology....going into Asus screens was a small step backwards but as a machine is extremely fast. Also I am playing a game called Heroes of Might and Magic 5 which has loads or requirements and I put all the settings in maximum and I still have excellent graphics and smooth gameplay as never before!
In order to see what I mean about the screen you need to see side by side the two screens (sony x black) and Asus ones. -
cheers -
I bought it £1280 from Yoyotech in tottenham court road. U can sell the 2 512sticks in CEX shop further up the road which is what I will do. I bought the 2x1GB sticks for 135 pounds and I am hoping to get around 50 pounds for the 2x512sticks so it will cost me the whole laptop £1380 pounds. Built quality is ok... nice keyboard and loads of features on...such as wifi, bluetooth, infrared and so on. Its the best laptop I think that you can find for the specs and price...otherwise you end up paying more than 1500pounds for a similar to that with not even a 256mb dedicated graphic card

ah just tried something..
go to www.crucial.com and run a system scan.. it will tell u exactly how many mem slots are taken up/available... hope it helps.. -
£135 for 2x1 GB? is that 533mhz or 667? Its quite cheap for 667 (since i heard W3j comes with a 667)...or maybe its just crucial ram thats ALOT $$$ £124 for only 1 Gb ... -
I tried that tool a few weeks ago when I bought the macine and it could not recognise my machine model. Now it stills does not recognise it but it tells me that I got the 1.5GB ram at the moment which is correct but it says that the maximum that the laptop can take is 4GB ram which is strange as I know it takes maximum 2gb.
-
Its 64 pounds for 1GB stick of ram 667 speed of course and you can get from yoyotech.co.uk as they do have it in stock now
here is the link

They are very cheap at the moment the memories and you can save even more if you sell the 2x512mb sticks that you will not need after the upgrade. -

acutally im very skeptical about companies stating that their Yonah systems can only support 2gb of ram...we know the Yonah can support up to 4 gb.
My guess is that companies cant test if their systems can handle 4gb because at the time of testing 2x 2gb sticks were not available, therefore the company just put 2gb as max for a save side.
If i am right... well then...2gb is not max, and you can check our 4gb when 2gb modules become cheap enough.
BTW, regarding your keyboard ram, there are clips holding the keyboard in. Those clips needa be pressed inward and then you can lift the keyboard out and then chagne the ram... but no one knows 100% about this because it is not out in North America yet.
Also regarding selling your 2x 512 ram...well what if you havta send in ur lappy for a repair..., you know you should send it in as stock...cos if they had to replace your lappy for some reason...they prolly won't give your 2x 1gb modules back.... but who knows... ask proportable on this one..=\
Thanks,

Two things.....
1... Yonah systems can "support" 4gb, but the bios' are not set up for them as there are NO 2gb so-dimms at this time...... when they come out the bios will most likely need to be updated in order to use them, so leagally speaking, they currently only support 2gb and until 2gb sticks come out, there's really no need to look into it any further than that.
2. I'm not going to look back and find out who said it....... but if you took out 12 screws to access a ram stick in a W3, you're very unfortunate..... 2 screws hold the bottom access panel in place and two screws and 3-4 spring clips keep the keyboard in place...... total time to remove those screws, the old ram and install both of the new sticks should take less time than it does to remove 12 screws...... So either you don't know what you're talking about, or you have another computer and completely assuming that they're all the same.
3. Any system you send into Asus for repair should go back as stock. The main reason is because Asus has gotten systems back in the past and found that the root of the problem was in someone elses hard drive or ram and they're certainly not going to replace those - but it's still their time and since they pay to ship the system back, it's their money too...... so they wanted to simplify the process and simply tell everyone their system needs to return in stock form. That way, believe it or not, they've had plenty of people realize their system actually worked and Asus directed them to figure out which part was bad and to take care of it on their own..... makes a lot of sense.... more so than Asus finding out the problem was from a customer installed part and then trying to send them a bill for an hour of labor and shipping costs like other big companies would do....... -
Just to answer to the last couple of replies that being sent in the last hour.
I finally located the second 512mb ram under the keyboard. There are two screws at the back of the laptop with the letter K next to them. U need to be unscrewand then you need to press the 4 clips which are holding the keyboard in order to be able to lift it and find a small compartment with a silver top which is where the second ram is. Its not that difficult and if someone needs help with that please let me know and I will help and give more specific details if needed.
By the way memory checked now from computer and its officially 2GB
Not bad at all
Now I can be able to test the laptop in many different programs and see what the performance is.
"The four clips are quite visible in the keyboard at F1 is the first one, between F5 and F6 is the second one, F10 is the third one and Ins button is the 4 clip."
Good luck to anyone who wants to try it by himself. -

Lolaras, since your questions have been answered and you're all set...please try and fill us in on all your thoughts and opinions on the W3J so far. You're one of the lucky few who actually has a W3J already...only one other person on this forum has one, and there's so many of us dying to know as much as possible about It's performance, battery life, heat etc...When you get the chance, please fill us all in on as much as you care to share. We'd all really appreciate it. Pictures wouldn't hurt either
Congrats, and have fun!!! -
In terms of memory upgrading, I hope that the US W3j has the slot on the bottom of the notebook free rather than the one under the keyboard. Justin, do you know if the slot under the notebook will be free, unlike the W3V where you had to take the keyboard off inorder to add more ram.
-
Do you earn much in performance when you use 667 sticks instead of 533 MHz? I have heard that the latencys of the 667 MHz-sticks are so poor and the actual difference between 533 and 667 MHz is so small that the performance is the same.
Edit: Found Apacer PC4200/533 MHz 1 GB DDR2 with CL4 and TwinMos PC5300/667 MHz 1 GB DDR2 with CL5. Which memory would suit the W3j best? -

^ my luck I'd scratch the screen while doing it and have to create 8 different threads to debate over what to do.

Since I put the 2gb ram in my laptop I have not done many experiments to see what the performance will be. I do not expect to be much greater than before when it was 1gb ram as it came out if the box when I bought it. And since I found out yesterday after I done a check in my computer and find that the maximum ram can be 4gb its always going to be a question...does it worthy to take it to the next lever and install 2x2gb sticks on the machine...the answer will be no I think. As for the question does it worthy to put 533 or 667 sticks I just put 667 for the sake of piece of mind. If I had put the 533 ones I will be always wondering will it have been better to add the 667 instead. So that way I do not have to worry for that dilemma.
how to instal 2x1024 ram in W3J
