Can't you Fn+F8 to switch to external monitor?

Right click desktop and click properties. It'll open on your busted screen, so press Alt+Spacebar and type M and press right, now the properties window should be stuck to your cursor and you can move your cursor into the external monitor (without clicking at all) and you will have the Properties window on your external monitor.

Go to Settings and you should be able to select 'Monitor 2' as the primary monitor.

Close the notebooks screen and it should switch to the external monitor. Try what namaiki said first, its usually FN + 6-8 (It should be marked out on the keyboard)

    As also suggested above:

First set your resolution on the PRIMARY to something that the external will support; then disable dual screen (dangerous because you may find it difficult to make it dual again if this fails). Then, press Fn+F8. That should "clone" the display on the external monitor, which is one way to get what you need.

Try pressing FN+F8 multiple times, with breaks of about 10 seconds in-between since it may take a while to kick in.
