ok I will slowly review it
update it day by day
As I got this laptop so far execeeded all my expectations, I needed laptop that will be fast enough , light and will have everything on it stock standard so i dont have to put any other add-on gadgets .
Im always on road coz of work and uni..
sick of big chunky laptops that give you backaches , you sick of them and you hate them after a while...
Original laptop specs:
Asus W5G00A
Color: White
CPU: Intel Pentium M 740 AKA Sonoma 1.73Ghz
RAM: 512mb ( 1x 256 on board + 1x 256 in the slot)
Screen: 12.1" WXGA Color Shine
Video: Intel 64mb shared
HDD: 80Gb 4200rpm (possible to find 5400rpm ver)
Cam: 1.3Megapixel 180 degrees rotating
OS: Windows XP Pro
Wireless: Intelpro2200 B&G
NIC: Realtek 8139/810x 10/100
Modem: 56k V92
1 PCMCIA slot
Card Reader:Sd/MMC/MS/Pro
Optical Drive: ultra slim 2xDVD+-R/RW Dual
Firewire port,serial,3xUSB2
As this laptop comes with 512 ram I actually ordered it with 256 only ,simply coz if you get with 512 you cant upgrade it to more
I ordered another stick of 512 for the slot, which will give maximum of 768.. I dont know if 1gb sticks exist , but asus web says that 768 would be max ram that can be put on, 256+512
suppliers were kinda confused that i wanna degrade the laptop heh
I must put this as one of the cons simple coz video is shared from the ram so there you lose 64mb, so if you run high end apps that need more ram...good luck
some internet specs say the ram is DDR2 400 or 533 but i cant find anywhere on the system, even run AIDA32 wouldnt say if it is DDR1 or DDR2 and what speed.. any suggestions how to find out?
Extras:
--------
1x Carry bag
1x laptop bag
1x RF white mouse (logitech re-badged)
1x 2400maw battery
1x 4800maw battery
1x charger kit
2x video cable
1x tel cable
I was very suprised with the extras, not many laptop manufacturers give you carry bag and laptop bag both badged asus, no targus.
If you wonder whats the difference , the carry bag fits erverything in it has mouse pocket, extra battery pocket, place for cables cds and your paperwork..(its very nice) the laptop bag its kinda surfie materia bag that fits the laptop in it and nothing else.
I love the mouse since its wireless/optical,perfect size..(midi) and works of the laptop wireless no extra thing to be pluged to usb.[]
has switch on/off button on the bottom os you dont waste the batteries while pc is off which i found annoying with my old Microsoft wireless optical desktop v.2 kb/mouse.
2 BATTERIES DIFFERENT SIZES!!! WOW!
You should see the expresion on my face...what the..
this model can support 3 different battery size 2400,4800 and 7200maw
from which 2 standard with the laptop..go asus!
Didnt get mouse pad !!! DAMN! LOL[][
]
Other:
------
3 x manuals
Windows XP Pro Cd for Asus
DVD and video editing software
Drivers and utilities (very useful tools!)
As I never read the manuals, I had to read this ones.
As I said there are very nice tools with the laptop that are not really standard around, such as Video Security and one of the manuals explains all the utilities that come with it.
update #1
Things that I like:
--------------------
- Laptop is really light weight
- Its damn quite, no noise , cant hear the fans..
- Doesnt heat up much, i've seen laptops burning after 3-4hrs usage.
- I love the screen! nice and clear and shiny.
- Usb ports nicely setup, one on each side. left rigth and back usb.
not much ports on the back...everything on the sides..
- Very stylish - Looks like ibook , Color! white, blue and silver looks awsome
- wireless button which turns wi-fi or bluetooth or both on, always good to have options
- batteries are not big and ugly, they fit the environment even tho the bigger sticks out...but coz its white looks good
- Global warranty 24months
-the cam has ZOOM whooopyyy[]
- simply and nice and NO FLOPPY YEY[)]
Things I got disapointed in:
-----------------------------
- baterry life - i was hoping that the 3 cell will go 2-2.5 hours in normal mode , where lasts barely 1h 40min in batery saver mode , normal probably just above hour..[xx(]
- i was expecting 2+ speakers for better surround, but there is only one big long one just bellow the screen. (no great loss)
- 2x DVD-+RW with latest laptop on the market??? i was expecting 4x atleast... if not 8. not sure if it is dual layer either.[!]
- WHAT HAPPEN TO GOOD OLD INFRA-RED PORTS ???
- 12.1" WXGA shiny screen with no drivers?? standard monitor 60Hz?
YEAH RIGHT..!
- The cam rotates one way only and the same way back..dumb!!! i was mistake which way was it was.

So does the W5 use a microdimm or an sodimm? I haven't cracked any of ours open yet, but you have to consider the following......
The board can take 1gb sticks....... but the bios might not be able to handle. Also, if the W5 is using microdimms, 512mb is the largest they make right now, so your dreams of a 1.25 gig is just a pipe dream until it's available.
If it's an sodimm, certainly there are 1gb sticks out there and their price has come way down. However, the official specs limit the W5 to 768mb of RAM, which would mean the bios probably is set to handle more at this time.
Thanks,
Justin

Well, a microdimm is like 1/2 the length of an sodimm...... A microdimm is about 1.75 inches (>4.4cm)
I'm starting to think it's not a microdimm...... because no one is making ddr2 microdimms yet, and certainly none at 1gb. ...
a 512mb ddr333 microdimm right now goes for about 150% of what the same amount in sodimm format goes for.... ddr2 is already expensive and 1gb sticks in any format are very expensive in notebooks..... so you would be looking at one outrageous bill if you were getting a ddr2, 1gb microdimm.....
So, I'm guessing either it's an sodimm, or your supplier lied or doesn't know jack..
Thanks,
Justin

Surfer,
Many thanks for your review. I'm also a fellow Aussie and after reading your thoughts on the W5 I am keen to get one too. The other laptop I had in mind was the Dell 700m which is also a 12' widescreen laptop (although not Sonoma). While specs wise it comes close to the W5, the latter is a newer laptop and looks far sexier with its white colour although more expensive.
I can't seem to find any retailers with the W5 though. Ideally i would like a retailer who has it in stock so I can check it out. May I ask where you bought it from and how much? Did it really come with all those accessories as standard (mouse, 2 batteries etc)?
Finally any chance of seeing those pics ??If you need space to host them just create a free acount at www.streamload.com
PS: What's the dead pixel policy on this particular model?
thanks again.

The pixel policy on the W5, should follow asus' standard policy, which is also our standard policy...... which is on our site..... my best guess is it's exactly what you'll find, since the warranty originates from the main office...

PROPortable,
Do you by any chance have any photos of the W5's screen? I was under the impression that this was a 'crystal view' glossy type screen like the Dell 700m (and which many people say is gorgeous) however I think I read a post from you somewhere in these forums that the screen isn't of the glossy type but somewhere in between.
The glossy screen is an important purchasing factor for me so I was hoping to see some photos of it but so far I haven't come across any online.
Thanks

(b) 2 adjacent bright dots OR 2 adjacent dark spots; or

Photographing that screen is near impossible..... but you need a pretty good job. I don't think you can really show off the depth of the colors unless you take it against another screen. The way we take pictures of the screen is by turning off all external light...... that'll give you a better idea of the quality of the colors..

The large battery also doesn't stick out as much as I expected and it seems rounder and nicer than the Del 700m extended battery and the white colour was a good idea.

The W5 is a package. Whether there will be a barebone down the road in black is yet to be seen. The W5 comes as a package, you can ram and get another hard drive, but the package is the package... it comes just like that from Asus. It's not a system that we're building from scratch..
Not a chance, all of the new systems are already based on that price.
If you don't need that stuff, you're better off with the M5.. there is a reason we have plenty of options. The W5 is widescreen...... This doesn't mean much.... It's a smaller screen than whats on the M5. A 12' widescreen is about the height of a 10.5" screen.. plus a little extra width.... So you lose a lot of height in the W5 compared to the M5... technically the W5 is a smaller computer.
A 14" widescreen, is about the height of a 13".. which isn't much taller than a 12" screen.. maybe 1/4"..... so maybe thats what you're looking for.... like the W3 as you said.

Justin

Hey Justin, I was wondering about the specs on the black version of the W5... or is the US only getting the white version? I've visited ProPortable site and would like to buy from you guys in the future... but i would like to be able to customize the specs a little. Will the W5 be able to incorporate the Hitachi 40gb 7200rpm notebook drive that you have available on the M5. I was also wondering if the price cuts that Intel just made on the 700series centrino chips will be seen in the prices of the W5 any time soon? Is there also a docking station that is available for the W5?
What i want ideally is just an widescreen version of the M5... i dont really see the uses for the camera or the DVD burner. What other benefit is there to choose the W5 over the M5 that would justify the extra $300? -
My dream specs for W3
Color: black
CPU: Intel Pentium M 740 AKA Sonoma 1.73Ghz
RAM: 768mb ( 1x 256 on board + 1x 256 in the slot)
Screen: 12.1" WXGA Color Shine
Video: Intel 64mb shared
HDD: 40Gb 7200rpm

OS: no OS -$100 =)

Modem: 56k V92
1 PCMCIA slot
Card Reader:Sd/MMC/MS/Pro
Optical Drive: ultra slim DVD/CD-RW
Firewire port,serial,3xUSB2
When do you think i can customize this system?
-
I want to add couple of more things to the posts above..
1st I tried to get this order with noOS and save some $$ but u cant coz comes with Asus ver of xp , same as dell so keep dreaming for no OS and saving money
Black version is same as this but with 256mb ram 60gb hdd and 1.6ghz
Other thing you guys cant find the laptops in many online shops simply coz when i odered shipment came in australia in containers and i had to push the wholesalers to do their work as in to unpack them and ship them str8 to us. So you will be waiting a bit till online shops have them...
I agree with PROPortable about the pictures of the screen ,really hard to capture the bautiful colors...screen is kinda crystal clear and bit reflective... external light makes it hard to picture it.
Love the white and blue conbination and silver i will post picture with the lid closed most likely tonite.
the good side of the 4200rpm slow hdd is that wont use the battery as much 7200rpm 8mb cahce hdd would.. everything has good and bad sides..
btw kimochi.. the M5 has the crap screen compared to the nice one from W5..
(-ASUS-*-W5G00A-) -

even though most people would think the W5 is bigger than the M5, the M5 has a taller screen... so technically it's better for people who are scrolling vertically a lot... I get this all the time... everyone isn't into widescreen, and then some people think they are but they only are becasue they think it's the "in thing".... but.. to give people an idea.... you lose plenty of height, so it's not perfect for everyone.. But it's a great new system.
Thanks,
Justin

i updated the pics with new with closed lid sorry for the bad quality , i got nice digi cam but just dont have much time to make a stylish photos. and the most of the pics are taken night time ..[|)]
If you want to see more just request..
for the screen I dont have the problem with scrolling a lot..the mouse scrol does the job, i agree that wide screen are "the thing"
..but u get used to it..i like it...fits the size of the laptop..
coz the keyboard is wide..you know what i mean
for me is PERFECT, dream laptop and im such a picky person, ubelivably picky... i would sacriface that screen size for the camera coz i hate addon gadgets that you need to plug and have cords everywhere, and if you like web cam its worthed even if you use it once.. hs a webcam and mic button on the side if you wanna do secret shots or just to lazy hehe[][

everybody says its macintosh rip..hehe looks like ibook but better
for the speaker im trying to figure my self, coz thta long thing is just nice looking makeup and i was looking today and trying to fgure out if there is one speaker or 2 behind, my guess would be 2 spakers one left and one right, knowing how speakers work and are made.
3cell like i said lucky if you get 2hrs, 6 cell lucky if you get 4hrs
9 cell lucky if you get 6 hrs on low, i wa readind around and the 9 cell one wights around 420 or 440g...cant remember the exact weight
3- 2400 - 1.5hrs , 2max
6 - 4800 - 3.5hrs, 4 max
9 - 2400+4800=7200 maw - assuming 5hrs..6max
some reviews said 7 hrs but i assume not doing crap haha

ok I see that the ram are DDR2 400mhz
and the board is able to support up to 533mhz right
since the internal 256mb cannot be replaced
can it be possible to replace the slot one for 533mhz?? (that makes it 1 400mhz and 1 533mhz)
also can you take some pic when you have the 9-cell battery
and tell us how does it feel with the extra weight, is it noticeable, what's the actual battery life, does the back of the battery bother you...etc.

it's a 9 cell battery on a 3.5 pound laptop...... it'll get about 7 hours of life. Big, yes...... much bigger than the 6 cell? No.. The 3 cell is short lived, but tiny.... it's all about what you're looking to get out of it. The size of the 9 cell is going to be the same as whats on the S5/M5, for people who have seen pictures....... it sticks out about 1.25"... so compare that with what the 6 cell sticks out.
I'm not sure how onboard ram functions exactly... not sure if the speed of it is entirely important to the system since it's part of the motherboard.. but swapping that ram out shouldn't do any more good than it can do bad.

1.25" is kind of big...tehee....
I don't mean swapping the internal ram
I mean swapping the slot one with a 533mhz
then it will have an internal 400mhz and a slot 533mhz
does that combination work?
or is it gonna take the slot 533mhz as 400mhz to match the internal
then I wouldn't pay the extra money to get a 533mhz ram

All in all, the power adapter is about 1/2 the size of the 9 cell battery..... it's very small.. the brick itself is 4" x 1.5" x 1", plus the cords to the wall and computer.... but certainly the smallest PS most people have seen.

There is a new detailed review of the W5 here,
http://www.cpluse.com/Module/Show.aspx?id=1359
Overall it seems they are very happy with it.
My only gripe is the 512MB of RAM like Surfer mentioned. As 65 of that will be taken up by the Graphics Win XP performance will suffer to a degree and things would be even worse with Longhorn when it's released as I doubt it'll run well on less than 512.
How easy is it to customise it when Asus ships them this way? Can you just order it from the supplier with 768 already installed or do we need to do what Surfer did...order it with 256 and then buy and add the other 512 ourselves? -
PROPortable Company Representative
Well the W5 is using an so-dimm afterall (not a microdimm like the S5/M5 ... so that does make it a cheaper option. But you can either customize the ram before you buy it or do it yourself. It's very open and easy for you to upgrade.
Thanks,
Justin

] Yes I know that there are few if any add-ons in the Expresscard format right now and I understand why they went with a PC Card slot (probably forced to choose due to small footprint) but later this year the faster Expresscard bus will enable real-time encoding TV Tuners and other great new expansion options in the Expresscard format that were not possible due to the slower PC Card speeds.

Do any new notebooks have expresscard's built in yet? I thought, just like sATA hard drives, they just weren't ready yet.
I see some great used in having expresscard..... at this point, with everything that is built into these notebooks... there isn't much at all anyone is using pcmcia cards for these days.
Thanks,
Justin

Well I have just gone out to the shops to check out some laptops. Despite going to 5 big Department type stores here in Australia and seeing over 30 laptops I was not able to find any smaller than 13.3" screen. There were no 12" anywhere.
What alarmed me though is how small the 13" ones themselves were. The screen was really small and while perfectly usable it alarmed me to think what a 12.1" like in the W5 would be even smaller.
It looks DECEPTIVLY bigger on the photos that people have posted. But when you see these 13" laptops next to their 14" or 15" cousins they start to look very small.
While I had my eyes firmly set on the W5 I am now a little reluctant if it is going to be absolutely tiny. Portability is a bonus but I already have a PDA so I would prefer a comfortable screen as well.
Can anyone post some photos with their hands (or themselves) in the photo as well so that we can gaze the true size? Surfer are you able to snap another pic mate?
Thanks

How hard is it for you to take a ruler and measure out the screen?
Do get the angle, measure over 16" and up 10"... that will give you the correct ratio and is the best way to find the angle. Then measure up that angle 12"...... thats the screen size....
Thanks,
Justin
